Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a protective cap for the module connnector on the H5 when not using a module? I'm asking in order to use the H5 with a shotgun mic and no module to reduce size and weight.

A: There is no protective cap included or available.

Q: 2. I see that you can record a line-in via the XY module (e.g. for lav mics), but can you record the XY at the same time as that line in? So, could I have a lav mic plugged into the line-in _and_ also record the XY audio to get ambient/location sound separately from the lav?

A: You can definitely combine the XY module with a lav mic, however, the 3.5mm input on the XY module is for a line level signal. Since you want to connect a mic and not a line level signal, I would recommend using an XLR adapter with your lav mic and connecting the mic to one of the XLR-1/4" combo jacks. If your lav mic requires plug-in power, you can use Rode's VXLR Plus 3.5mm TRS Female to XLR Male Adapter with Phantom Power Converter (B&H # ROVXLRP) which will convert phantom power to plug-in power. If the lav mic uses a battery for power or does not require any power, use the Rode VXLR 3.5mm TRS Female to XLR Male Adapter (B&H # ROVXLR) which just converts the connector to XLR. The XLR input offers the best options for recording the XY mics and lav mic simultaneously.

Q: 3. If I'm using a lav mic (via XLR input) should I choose Stereo or Multi to record? Which will give the best results?

A: Choose stereo mode.

Q: 4. What's the battery life with continuous use of alkaline batteries?

A: When phantom-powering two typical mics, I get a bit over one hour from brand-name NiCD or NiMH (the H5 takes four AAs). That drain rate is mostly due to phantom power's heavy draw. Fresh alkalines last a bit longer, maybe a hair over 90 minutes. The rare times I've used my H5 without feeding phantom power to a mic pair, the batteries last much longer: e.g., after 2-2.5 hours, the initially fresh batteries show around 2/3 full.TIP 1: If you shoot near wall outlets, you can connect the H5 via its mini-USB port to any small cheap USB charger by any USB cable you have laying around, to run off wall current forever. I do this for shooting plays. This way, I can leave the LCD setting to stay lit (i.e., no power saving feature to turn off the LCD backlight after x minutes), so I can easily see recording levels at all times.TIP 2: If you shoot away from any wall outlets, you can still power the H5 externally via the same mnii-USB port by using any external power pack (like folks use for cell phones and tablets on long plane trips). Just make sure the connection is secure. A little gaf tape is good insurance.

Q: 5. I just recently bought a DSLR camera and was wondering if anyone had used the XY mic for vlogs or where you need to focus on someone for sound in an environment that's is louder than normal. Is the XY mic okay or should I invest in the shotgun attachment as well?

A: I'm with ROBERT W. on this. Also, the XY records stereo which, to my ear, is usually problematic in loud environments. I use a Rode VideoMic Pro on my DSLR within 5-10 feet of the speaker which captures audio nicely. I'd like to add a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG2 to use with my Zoom for primary sound and then use the Rode VideoMic Pro with my 80D for reference audio. I think this would provide the most flexibility for the run-and-gun and interview-type video work I do.

Q: 6. What kind of warranty do you offer?

A: This product has a one year, limited manufacturer's warranty.

Q: 7. The mono TRS in Input 1 is balanced, right?

A: The manual does not indicate that the TRS inputs1/2 are balanced. It says the tip is hot. So I expect they are not balanced.

Q: 8. Is this a good device for recording Live karaoke with it's built in Mics. Is it too Much of a device or too little? I am new to these devices and want to truly hear how I sound while singing. Not while I am singing. and hearing my self in my head

A: This recorder is a great choice for capturing either the live performance in the room with the built-in mics, or for connecting the inputs on the bottom to a mixer or speaker output for a direct recording.

Q: 9. I have a Sony FDR-AX33. Is it necessary to have an adapter (Zoom HS-1)?

A: YYes - this is the recommended adapter: Sony Camera Shoe Mount B&H # SOVCTCSM1

Q: 10. can the XYH-5 capsule be decoupled into a L/R mono, or does it always have to be in stereo?

A: I don't believe it can be decoupled, however if you have audio editing software you can separate the channels that way.
