Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will this new blackmagic assist recorder will take raw 4k from fs700 and downcovert to record prores 1080????

A: The specs for the Blackmagic Design Video Assist HDMI/6G-SDI Recorder and 5 Monitor do not list 4K. Therefore we are of the opinion that you cannot do what you are asking.

Q: 2. Will the 3G 7" model fit in a 12G cage? If not, may I please have a link to a cage that is designed for the 3G 7" model?

A: The SHAPE BMD 4K Video Assist Cage is the only cage made to fit the 12g Blackmagic Design Video Assist 7" recording monitor.

Q: 3. Can I record the HD-sdi output of a Panasonic video switcher at 1920x 1080i 59.94?

A: Yes, you certainly can. We mainly use the HDMI simply because our splitter is an HDMI.

Q: 4. If i plug a SDI input, from a Black Magic 4K, will it output the signal on HDMI as well so i can feed it into a wireless transmitter?

A: Both the SDI and HDMI signals are loop through and you are supposed to be able to view either output. And if you can view it, you can transmit it. So it is our opinion you will be able to do what you wish on this yet unreleased item.

Q: 5. recording time on a sandisk 128 sdxc card in prores hq?

A: To get the correct answer, the video resolution and frame rate also must be factored in. Since people typically shoot in 1080p24, we will go with that timing. Shooting 108024p on a 128GB U3 SD Card, ProRes 422 HQ will record 40 minutes.

Q: 6. So it will still record 60fps at 1080p on my Canon 6D (even though my Canon 6D only records 60fps at 720)?

A: Sorry, but recorders can only record the FPS and video resolution given them by the camera. In other words, the recorder cannot up res 60FPS 720 to 60FPS 1080. It should not be much of an issue. 720 vs 1080 is detectable usually only to the trained eye.

Q: 7. will it record 10bit n-log on the nikon z6?

A: Duplicate

Q: 8. I have HDMI compatibility problems with my older Nikons and I'm assuming no issue with the D7200. Has Video Assist been tested on a D7000 and a D5100?

A: Unfortunately this monitor is not out in the wild yet for testing. Blackmagic has stated that the Video Assist HDMI/6G-SDI Recorder and 5 Monitor allows you to record from professional cameras and camcorders, as well as popular DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Do note that the Nikon D7000 as well as the D5100 do not output a native clean HDMI signal.

Q: 9. What file format does this make? MP4?

A: This records ProRes or DNxHD files.

Q: 10. I know some recorders like the odyssey will split recordings into 4gb clips which you then have to join together later with software. Does the BMVA do this? Or does it record to one file one the card?

A: 1 file per recording. So each time you stop or start recording a new file is made, not based incrementally.
