Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Has anyone tried fitting this lens in the Nikon CL-M2 case? (The case description says it is primarily for 70-200mm or 300mm Nikons)

A: The Nikon CL-M2 Lens Case (Black) is designed to hold the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4D IF-ED Lens which is 3.54 x 8.76" / 90 x 222.5 mm. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is 3.76 x 7.99" / 95.5 x 203 mm. While we cannot test this combination, it is our opinion that there is no issue as to fitting.

Q: 2. oN MY ORGINAL BOX, it states compatible equip , ie TC-201 but only viewing this teleconv , this converter does list My Lense VR 80-400 4.5-15.6 AF.Will it work with this lense ??

A: The TC-201 pre-dates the lens in terms of existence and its literature has simply not been updated to reflect compatibility with this new model. The information included with the new lens is accurate. Keep in mind the TC-201 does not support autofocus and may cause vignetting.

Q: 3. Does this product have a US warranty?

A: Yes, this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens would come with a 1 year USA manufacturers warranty.

Q: 4. Is this Lens compatible with Nikon Teleconverters?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens is compatible with the TC-14E II and TC-14E III teleconverters with restrictions, ( Autofocus is available only with cameras that offer f/8 support. These include the Z 7, Z 6, D5, D500, D4/D4S, Df, D850, D810/D810A, D800/D800E, D750, D600/D610, D7100, D7200 and D7500. For cameras that do not support f/8, teleconverters can be used without autofocus.). And the TC-17E II, TC-20E II and TC-20E III teleconverters will work on the lens without autofocus.

Q: 5. Hi my question is : can we use AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens by Nikon ,together with the original nikon X1.7 converter , with camera nikon D800e , and having a fair auto focus , as well ? thanks for your answer in advance .Avidar Maxime

A: If you use the Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED with the 1.7x teleconverter and D800E, you will not be able to retain autofocus, though this combination will fit.

Q: 6. Can I use a Nikon Teleconverter with a D7100 & Nikkor 80-400mmf/4.5-5.6 ED VR lens?

A: Bryan:All my gear comes from B&H. I have the D7000, the Nikkor 80x400, and the Kenko Tele-Plus converter at 1.4X. The combination is just fine. Here is the deal though that I was not prepared for, (my fault for not doing enough research). They say that a 1.4x costs 1 f-stop. This is correct, but only if you are nearer the 80mm range on the zoom. When you zoom out to 400mm, it will cost you 3 f-stops. The tele. will cost you f5.6 vs. f4 on the low end and likely f8 vs. f5.6 on the high end. This is assuming a 1.4x converter. Multiply that if you want to go 1.7x. It other words, I shoot birds and they move, and they hide in dark places. This makes the tele. a bit tough at 400mm due to the loss of 3 f-stops. I have to shoot too slowly to freeze them. For most other applications though, you should love it. I do. If you have the light and it doesn't move too much, this is a sweet combo.Best,Ray Swagerty- Charleston, SC

Q: 7. Will this lens auto focus with D7000 using the TC14 E II teleconverter, D3S and D4S using the TC14E II and TC17E II?

A: When you put the TC-14E on the 80-400mm, on its long end, the maximum aperture loses one stop, i.e. it drops from f5.6 to f8. Technically, the D7000 and D3S can only auto focus with f5.6 or faster lenses so that they are not supposed to AF with a TC-14E on. In reality, when it is bright, AF will still work to some degree but not reliable. On the other hand, the D4S has some AF points that can work with f8 lenses so that such combination will AF. With a 1.7x TC, you lose 1.5 stops and you are pretty much out of luck.Of course, on the 80mm end, this zoom is faster, but there really is no point to use a TC on the 80mm end.

Q: 8. Some of the newer Nikons list the VR as VR II , but this new 80-400 does not. Is the VR on this the newest generation, or is it the same as the original 80-400 that I've had for over 10 years?

A: Nikon doesnt mention a specific version of the VR in the AF-S 80-400mm. It would be an improved version upon the older model, though. Nikon states that the VR in the AF-S 80-400mm is capable of compensating for up to 4.0 stops, while the VR in the AF version was only capable of compensating for up to 2.0 stops.

Q: 9. thinking of buy nikon d7100. would this lens work with it?

A: The Nikkor 80-400mm lens will certainly work with the d7100 and produce good results. But this is not a well-matched combination in that the FX lens would be under used by the DX format d7100. It would be more appropriate to use an FX format camera with this excellent lens, such as the D810 (a great combination that I use all the time), or to use a dx format lens with the d7100, such as the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR. You will get good results with the latter at a fraction of the cost, and get a huge zoom range too. SummaryD810 + 80-400mm = great but expensived7100 + 80-400mm = quite good, but camera not up to the lensd7100 + dx 18-300 = plenty good enough at a fraction of the price

Q: 10. Would the 20063 70-200mm with a teleconverter be a suitable option to this lens?

A: Yes you can use the Nikon TC14E III with this lens for the best results and the least amount of light loss. https://bhpho.to/2SYcKLh
