Featuring white LEDs, The Fin Dynamic Chrome Vocal Microphone from Heil Sound is a dynamic vocal microphone with vintage deep-chrome plated construction that delivers great vocal reproduction and charm. The Fin uses a highly sensitive neodymium, boron and iron magnet with a large 1-1/18" aluminum low mass voice coil assembly for exceptional frequency response and mid-range reproduction. Its tight cardioid polar pattern aids against off-axis noise and feedback. A windscreen is internally mounted within the grill, and four LEDs illuminate the capsule.

The frequency response is 50 Hz to 18 kHz with a mid range at 4 kHz. The steel body is copper plated and then double chrome plated producing a deep chrome finish. A blue molded internal foam windscreen inside the grill covers the dynamic microphone element mounted in a specially tooled rubber shock mount.

The four LED lamps mounted inside can only be illuminated when using The FIN with one of the 3-pin balanced XLR inputs of a professional mixing console that supplies a 48V phantom down the balanced microphone line.

The microphone audio will also work with unbalanced low impedance inputs typically found on amateur radios, communications audio or simple public announcement systems. None of these will have the proper voltage to illuminate the lamps, but the microphone will fully work.

Standard 5/8"-27 microphone stand threads allow The Fin to be mounted on booms or floor stands.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I am a filmmaker. What is the process for separating the polyphonic files in post? Is conversion software provided with this device? Is the software free?

A: The Sound Devices MixPre 6 II records six multi-track files as well as a stereo mix to an SD card. The files would be loaded onto your computer and then can be put into software for mixing. If you use video software, you can import the individual tracks, and sync them to the video. Then you can make adjustments in gain, EQ and edit each individual track. Adobe Premiere Pro CC (1-Year Subscription, Download), BH #ADPPCCDL is a popular video editing software that will allow you to import audio tracks.

Q: 2. Do C-mount lenses cover the full frame of the Sony A6000 sensor, or is there vignetting? Thanks!

A: A C-mount lens used with this adapter on your A6000 will not encounter any vignetting.

Q: 3. can this be synced to Sony FX3's?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II does have timecode and can be synced to the camera. However, the Sony FX3 Cinema Camera does not have any timecode input or output so you will need to use a timecode device like the Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator (B&H # TETE1MK2) or the Track E Recorder with Timecode (B&H # TETRACKE).

Q: 4. I'm thinking about upgrading from my Mixpre-6 (first gen.) to the II. I have my settings/presets just the way I want them on my original recorder. If I export my presets from my original recorder, will the II accept them with no trouble?

A: Ask Sound Devices. Their tech support is pretty good.

Q: 5. Can I record 2 track live music to an SD card and then open it in Performer Lite for mix down?

A: Wav files recorded at 96 kHz 24-bit to an SD card using the MixPre-3 II can be imported to Mac, Windows or Linux computers with most DAW applications installed. Sound Devices does not list all compatible audio applications but the manual does mention Pro Tools, Reaper, Cubase, GarageBand, Audacity, and "many, many more." Although we are not able to confirm compatibility with Performer Lite, it seems likely that it will work.

Q: 6. Am I correct in thinking that there is no balanced output? That seems like a foolish oversight.

A: The Sound Devices MixPre-3 II 3-Channel / 5-Track Multitrack 32-Bit Field Recorder (BH # SOMIXPRE3II) offers the following I/O: Analog I/O: 3x XLR 3-Pin Female Balanced Line/Mic Input 1x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Aux Input 1x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Headphone Output 1x 1/8" / 3.5 mm TRS Female Unbalanced Line Output Digital I/O: 1x 1/8" / 3.5 mm SMPTE Timecode Input 1x 1/8" / 3.5 mm SMPTE Timecode Output 1x Micro-HDMI SMPTE Timecode Input

Q: 7. Does it come with the MX-LMount battery sled?

A: The MX-LMount battery sled must be purchased separately. The MX-4AA battery sled is included with the Sound Devices MixPre3 II.

Q: 8. How long would this last on a 20,000 mAh battery via USB-C? Or, how big of a mAh battery needed to power it all day?

A: Sound Devices has not published a benchmark for battery life with USB-C power banks, as this figure would be highly situational, but 20,000 mAh is the recommended capacity to use with the MixPre-3 II for better battery life than the included AA battery sled.

Q: 9. So, it only has 1 XLR input? Does it supply phantom power?

A: Hi John, The MixPre-3 II has 3 XLR inputs along with a stereo 3.5mm input as well. The XLR inputs can all supply phantom power, and the 3.5mm input has PIP (plug-in-power) available for 1 mic.

Q: 10. Can you jam timecode from a camera that sends timecode over hdmi like the Sony FS5 without leaving the hdmi cable plugged in?

A: The MixPre does not see timecode from an external source, unless it is recorded onto an unused audio track. It does have a generator that can feed your other devices, such as a camera.
