Wimberley clamps have a unique tongue-in-pocket design that protects internal parts from dust and grit. The tongues are nearly twice as long as those on conventional Arca-Swiss style clamps. This added length counteracts the tendency of the moving jaw of the clamp to hinge backward during clamping, thus keeping the jaws aligned with the geometry of the plate and eliminating unwanted bending forces on the threaded stud.

There is a stop screw located on the end of the stud. This screw keeps the knob and internal workings of the clamp captive.

Two shallow channels extend from the sides of the clamp and stop just short of the central tapped hole. These channels allow greater fore-aft adjustment when using the safety stops on Wimberley quick release plates.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I want to attach Canon 7D and 17mm-40mm lens on WH-200. What plate choices can I consider?

A: I spoke to Wimberley about this topic. The WH-200 was not exactly meant for this, but they do have a solution. With the addition of Wimberleys M-8 plate, you can attach a camera body to the WH-200. The M-8 is a long plate with a built in clamp. It puts the camera in a forward facing position like long lenses are when they are attached. However if you use a camera plate on the bottom of your camera you are stuck in a horizontal or landscape framing. In order to achieve a vertical or portrait framing you really need a L-Plate. So to make this work, you would need a M-8 plate and a L-Plate.

Q: 2. Any way to attach a handle to use it as a video head like Gitzo Gimbal fluid head?

A: Unfortunately, you can not attach a Pan Bar to a Gimbal Head. We will recommend using Fluid head for Video recording.

Q: 3. Is the wh 200 compatible with gitzo 2545 or 2542?

A: I concur with Ronald W. S. I love my Wimberley Gimbal head. I think it should work with any tripod, with the caveats about sturdiness mentioned below. It's really more the size and weight of the lens that matters--the Wimberley can actually hold a small mirrorless camera and I sometimes use it that way because of the ease of maneuvering the head.

Q: 4. Will this tripod head work on a monopod or even a ground pod? And where can I find the chart to look for the accessory quick release plate for my lenses ....Canon 100 to 400 mm IS II. Thanks

A: It works wonderfully with a Monopod, as long as you get the right monopod. The fiddly ones start with a mediocre diameter tube and come in many sections for portability, and thus the end section has a very small diameter and causes instability with a heavy lens, body and gimbal combo. With the right monopod, such as some of the Gitzo's like the GM2542 Series 2 or even better, the GM4532 Series 4 you will have no problems. It's great in fact. I'd also get a spike and use the side mount. Much faster in operation, especially if you adjust the up/down height a lot in a day. I personally consider the ProMediaGear TR42 monopod the best there is and much better with a gimbal than the normal monopod heads. But keep in mind that the TR42 starts with a 1.65" (!) diameter carbon fiber tube and is rated for 70 pounds.

Q: 5. Does the WH-200 break down for compact packing for travel? I am debating between the WH-200 and the Really Right Stuff PG-02 FG Pano-Gimbal Head with PG-CC Cradle Clamp. There is quite a bit of difference on the price.

A: I have not tried to break this down for traveling purposes. When I travel I simply pack it in my suitcase between other clothes. I'm not sure that breaking it down would make much of a difference even if it could be. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck with your decision

Q: 6. Just ordered the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens which quick release adapter do I need to purchase with this WH-200?

A: The main purpose for purchasing a WH-200 would be to use it more so for Bird or Wildlife photography to help pan and track more steadily across a shot. If you think this is something you may be doing, it would help quite a bit but is not necessary by any means..

Q: 7. Has anyone put a RRS quick-release clamp on this? If so, how does it work for you?

A: Yes, the RRS clamp works well with this gimbal.

Q: 8. What does it mean when it says that the gimbal has a quick release base?

A: If you are talking about where the camera attaches to the Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base, it works just like your quick release on your tripod.

Q: 9. What other accessory do I need besides...I got a canon 100 to 400mm lenses with 1.6 X and will get the 600mm down on the road. Thax

A: When I ordered the WH-200, I also ordered two quick release plates (used to attach the camera lens collar to the tripod head). Plates: P50, item#WIQRPP50. Two plates so I have one for the 100-400mm lens, and one for a 300mm F2.8 lens. Of course, you need a tripod to attach the WH-200 to.

Q: 10. If I am using a Nikon D7200 and a Sigma 150-600mm, will I need to purchase anything special in order to use this??? Thank you

A: The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base does not include a Quick Release Plate. For the Sigma 150-600mm lens get the Oben QR-53 Long Lens Quick Release Plate (5.3"). Here is the link: https://bhpho.to/2UIa8ih
