Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. So if I put this on a D7100 would it then be 36-180 focal length ?

A: Yes. That is correct. Any lens you mount on the D7100 and the rest of the Nikon DX cameras will always multiply the focal length of any lens by 1.5x.

Q: 2. What is the minimum focusing distance at 120mm? I was wondering if this would be used for shooting wedding rings etc.

A: 18 inches. Highly recommend camera on a tripod, aperture mode, manual focus at F4 then change to highest F stop your lighting permits (without moving the camera), minimum ISO setting and use timed shutter release. Also, to capture correct ring colors make sure your white balance set to actual light conditions.

Q: 3. I have a d7100 and 16-85. This is the FX equilivant focal length. How much of a IQ improvement can I expect if I upgrade my current gear to the D750 and this lens? I shoot landscapes exclusively as a hobby, but people are starting to ask for prints, so I'm considering moving up to full frame if it is a better quality.

A: When going to a full frame body such as the D750, youre going to have better control over your depth of field, better dynamic range and a higher ISO range to work with. With the 24-120 f/4 in particular, this lens would offer a constant aperture throughout the zoom range, whereas the 16-80mm lens would have a variable maximum aperture depending on how much you zoom in.

Q: 4. What size lens hood does this lens need?

A: The HB-53 is the hood designed for this lens.

Q: 5. Why does it come in white box instead of regular packaging?

A: The product comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's packaging. It includes all the manufacturer's accessories. It also comes with the standard Nikon warranty.

Q: 6. Is this lens sufficiently better than the earlier 24-120 lens to justify a trade?

A: No this is my second lens I personally like the first one is better.

Q: 8. whether this lens is suitable for landscape purposes with Nikon Dx ?

A: I've used this lens on both my D7000 (DX) and D610/750 (FX) cameras for landscapes and city scapes with great success. Your true focal distance at the widest is 36mm with a DX camera, but for landscapes that isn't really a huge limitation vs the 21mm Zeiss or even 14-24mm Nikkor. Assuming you are shooting vast wide open landscapes this is an excellent lens to grow into as you explore FX down the road and gains some reach with your current DX setup.

Q: 9. Us or gray market?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens (Refurbished), B&H # RBN241204GAF, would be a refurbished lens from Nikon USA, and includes a Limited 90-Day Warranty from Nikon USA.

Q: 10. Will this lens work with the D5300?

A: Yes, but the 24-120 lens is a FX lens. It costs more than twice the cost of a D5200. A cheaper alternative is the 18 - 105 zoom which is designed for the DX models.

I am currently using this on a D90 while waiting for the D600 to be announced. I would be happy to evaluate this lens again if I can get onto B&H's preorder list for the D600. I read a number of lukewarm reviews of the lens but given my photographic needs was close to deciding on it anyway. After reading Thom Hogan's comments that he thought it to be a good match for the D800 - along with the 28, 50 and 85mm 1.8 prime lenses - I was in. Obviously, his opinion on the lens performance outweighs anything I could write. It's not a small lens but I find it to be pretty comfortable to tote around. I find it to a comfortable balance on the D90. The AF speed/precision is amazing - better than the 35mm DX 1.8 I own. The quality of the images from this lens I think is better than either my 35 or 50mm prime lenses. The color balance seems better to me as well. It's hard to describe the image quality -- like it has more depth or something. I find myself eyeing all (almost all, anyway) the pictures I take with it - very gratifying. It's my first lens with VR and it works well. People quote shutter speeds of 1/10th s -- which still takes pretty steady hands - but I've seen it produce good images at that shutter speed. For the conditions I find myself in I need a couple more iso stops over the D90 -- but really good / useful feature. I'm not a pixel peeper - but to the extent I've looked, compared to the 35mm prime, I'm limited by the resolution of the D90 sensor. Again Thom Hogan would know better on a D800. Vignetting on a DX is not evident as you would expect. Hopefully it won't be a problem on the D600 although I understand Lightroom 4 corrects for this. (Lightroom 4 is also awesome, BTW.) Ditto for distortion - not evident as far as I can see on the D90. Similarly, LR4 has distortion template for this lens. It's a great focal range on a DX body for the photography I do. On the D600 with both FX and DX - very, very cool. Highly recommended.

This is a great lens to have. I rented the 28-300 then the 24-120 to try before I bought and found the 24-120 to be outstanding. It's light and is not top heavy(long length)like my 24-70. The picture quality is excellent. With the VR I can shoot in low light without my tripod. I highly recommend this lens.

I traded up from the 24-120mm 3.5-5.6 for use on my Nikon D 800.. I am finding that the fixed 4 lens is much better for the full frame D 800. Perhaps the 36 megapixels read flaws in lenses better? This lens is sharp! I have used it for landscapes, winter scenes and wildlife. It has been very responsive and given me sharp, well exposed images in a range of situations where lighting has been difficult, or contrast a challenge. The 24 mm wide angle was very adequate in landscape shots, without distortion.

As part of an eventual conversion to the FX platform I've been buying FX lenses. They are being used on a DX body, the Nikon D7000. This lens is better than I expected. The auto focus is very fast, the colors really do pop, and the flexibility brought by this particular focal range is fantastic. While this lens does not get you 2.8 low light shooting, the VRII works wonders. I shot in sunset light on the beach and easily got 3 to 4 fstops of stability. In fact during the 4 day trip to the beach I only took this lens off once. The sunsets shot with this lens are among the best taken, some of that is better technique, I know, but some of it is this wonderful lens.

Very sharp and versatile lens. Perfect focal length. Takes 77mm filters. VR works great!

Although I have not used this lens extensively yet, my test shots are sharp and contrasty. The longer focal length makes this a great travel lens.

Had the older version many years ago, and this lens is heads and shoulders above what the older one was. Great lens all around, great range to work with. Hesitant at first about f/4, rather than f/2.8, but the higher ISO capabilities of newer sensors mitigates that concern. You do lose a little DoF control, but it's alright. After having this a while, I'm considering selling my 24-70... the VR on this lens is nice for the everyday, and is a little less bulky than the 24-70. I'd rather free up a little cash to go towards another lens... (thinking selling the Nikon 24-70 and 70-200VR1 for a Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 OS) Bottom line - It's a good lens.

I love this lens very sharp, focus fast and beautiful Bokeh. Same people can think it's heavy but for constant F4 that you need to expect.

Fast focus and nice having F4 through the range. Gets me a little more light when shooting my kids dance performances without lugging around my f2.8 zoom.

Bought this lens to use on my FX Nikons as a portrait/general use lens and I am VERY pleased with it's perfomance. Wonderful to have the VR in a portrait length zoom and yet still have the wide angle capabilites for groups and scenics. I have shot this in studio and outdoors at F4 to F16 and it is sharp and crisp with a nice bokeh.
