Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Can you record with the onboard mic and a plugged in mic at the same time?
A: No. Plugging in a mic cuts off the built-in.
Q: 2. Any suggestions for audio settings for recording an acoustic concert in a venue that seats 400? Planning to set the unit down and forget it for the duration of the show. Just hitting record and letting the device do its thing. Is wav the best option? 48k 24 bit? Lo cut off? Limiter off? Auto level?
A: The gain control for the Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Onboard X/Y Microphone should always be set based on the situation, so that incoming audio is at an audible level without peaking. The low-cut filter and limiter are situational tools which can be used to remove low frequency content and tame unruly dynamics, respectively. In terms of recording quality, the highest quality the H1n is capable of recording at is 96 KHz/24-bit. These settings can be changed as needed to reduce file size. 44.1 KHz is considered to be CD quality.
Q: 3. Can I input two lavaliers using a stereo Y-connector to 1/8 AND have the mics each recorded on their own track (Mic #1 - Left Channel' Mic #2 - Right channel)... to clarify, I don't want the two lavaliers to be mixed on a single track or mixed on both tracks. (*one for each track) ?
A: Yes. You can use a mini mixer like the Saramonic AX1 Passive 2-Channel Audio Mixer for Cameras, Smartphones, Tablets, and Computers (B&H # SAAX1). Since the AX1 is passive and does not supply plug-in power for microphones, you will need to use microphones that do not require any voltage, like a condenser mic that has a battery, a wireless mic system, or a dynamic mic. The Polsen OLM-10 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone (B&H # POOLM10) has its own battery for power and could be a good option. As another option for a very simple setup, you could use a dual lavalier mic setup like the Polsen OLM-20 Dual Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone (B&H # POOLM20) which has two mics for left and right connected to one 3.5mm TRS plug and will automatically route each mic to the separate channels.
Q: 4. Does that dial at the top 0-10 have click stops or is it continuous? We've had problems with Zoom volume controls staying in place.
A: The volume dial on the Zoom H1n is continuous.
Q: 5. is there a difference recording into the camera with the rodevideo mic go vs recording into zoom?
A: Audio recorded to the Zoom would likely have lower noise due to the difference in preamps.
Q: 6. What is the Quickest time / Shortest time from the recorder being Off to recording?
A: Regarding the Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Onboard X/Y Microphone (Black), the time it takes from being off to recording would depend on the capacity of the microSD card you are using. The more memory your card has, the longer the H1n will take to index the stored files before the device is ready to use.
Q: 7. When you use the HOLD on the Zoom H1n, will it prevent the rotary dial from changing the input level?I have FOUR Zoom H1 recorders and use them to record with lav mics. I plug the lav into the Zoom H1, set the record level, start recording, then use the HOLD function and the recorder gets put into a pocket, etc. I'd hate to have the input level change because the knob gets moved while in someone's pocket. Also, I wish it was USB-C instead of microUSB, but that's not a big issue. The other thing I've really been wishing for in the Zoom H1 recorder is a SAFETY TRACK , so when I'm recording with a lav mic (which is mono), the LEFT channel will record at the level I set, and the RIGHT channel will be a few dB lower; allowing me to rescue anything that may have clipped. Basically asynchronous input levels, since I don't really need stereo for a lav mic.
A: When HOLD is used, the rotary dial is still active and the input level still be changed. Hopefully this potential issue can be addressed and fixed with a firmware update. Firmware updates are constantly being done to improve performance and quirks (based on consumer feedback).
Q: 8. Will it record a safety track at lower db for a mono input?
A: No, the Zoom H1n does not have the ability to record a safety track.
Q: 9. Is a remote control available for this device?
A: There is not a remote control unit for the Zoom H1n.
Q: 10. Can I connect this unit to my laptop as a live usb interface? If so what cable do need?
A: Yes, To use the ZOOM H1 as a computer microphone, connect the USB cable to both the computer and the ZOOM H1, with the recorder off. When prompted on the screen select "USB Audio" by pressing the “REC” button. In your computer sound preferences select the ZOOM H1 as the audio input
