Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can audio files be played back on this recorder?

A: Yes, you can play back your recordings, but It is not designed to play back files that were not recorded on the H1n.

Q: 2. How do you turn off the plug-in microphone power when the TRS input is connected to a stereo line source?

A: The Zoom H1N input automatically detects line level signal coming it so that it does not interfere with mic plugin power.

Q: 3. Is a remote control available for this device?

A: There is not a remote control unit for the Zoom H1n.

Q: 4. Does this record 32-bit or 32-bit float audio?

A: No, the Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder does not record in 32-bit. It records at a maximum of 24-bit.

Q: 5. When you use the HOLD on the Zoom H1n, will it prevent the rotary dial from changing the input level?I have FOUR Zoom H1 recorders and use them to record with lav mics. I plug the lav into the Zoom H1, set the record level, start recording, then use the HOLD function and the recorder gets put into a pocket, etc. I'd hate to have the input level change because the knob gets moved while in someone's pocket. Also, I wish it was USB-C instead of microUSB, but that's not a big issue. The other thing I've really been wishing for in the Zoom H1 recorder is a SAFETY TRACK , so when I'm recording with a lav mic (which is mono), the LEFT channel will record at the level I set, and the RIGHT channel will be a few dB lower; allowing me to rescue anything that may have clipped. Basically asynchronous input levels, since I don't really need stereo for a lav mic.

A: When HOLD is used, the rotary dial is still active and the input level still be changed. Hopefully this potential issue can be addressed and fixed with a firmware update. Firmware updates are constantly being done to improve performance and quirks (based on consumer feedback).

Q: 6. Is it possible to mount on a hot shoe?

A: Yes you can use this item to do that: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/851664-REG/zoom_zhs_1_hs_1_hot_shoe_mount_adapter.html

Q: 7. The instructions say that you can use up to a 32Gb SDHC card (i.e., the list of 'supported cards' go no larger than 32Gb). Is that an actual limit or can higher capacity SDHC cards be used? I have a 256Gb EVO U-3 card that would give me hours and hours of high quality audio, which is needed to record concerts.

A: That is correct, 32gb is the largest card that is compatible with the H1n. Recording Time WAV 44.1 kHz/16-Bit: 1 Hr 34 Mins per GB (Stereo) WAV 48 kHz/24-Bit: 57.5 Mins per GB (Stereo) WAV 96 kHz/24-Bit: 28.5 Mins per GB (Stereo) MP3 128 kb/s: 17 Hrs 21.5 Mins per GB (Stereo) MP3 256 kb/s: 8 Hrs 40.5 Mins per GB (Stereo) MP3 320 kb/s: 6 Hrs 56.5 Mins per GB (Stereo)

Q: 8. What is the minimum and maximum frequency response for this recorder?

A: Approx. 20Hz to 20kHz.

Q: 9. Can you connect this to the iPhone ?

A: The Zoom H1n is a stand-alone audio recorder that is designed to record audio independent of a phone; although you may connect an iPhone to it depending on what exactly the goal is and connection on said phone.

Q: 10. Among the other uses of this (recording reading) Can I use it to load DRM free (i.e. public domain recorded) audiobooks in mp3 format from a Mac and play them back? Does it sound okay on the speaker? My ears are wearing out from so much headphone use. Also, does the power-off-/sleep function work WHILE this is playing back? Or only if left doing nothing?

A: The playback functionality of the Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Onboard X/Y Microphone (Gray) pertains to files recorded on the device and would likely not work with external files loaded onto its memory card. Files such as audiobook MP3s would need to be recorded into the device to be played back by the H1N. The H1N features a small speaker however another option for playing back through a larger speaker would be to connect the headphone jack output to a speaker input via cable. The Auto Power Off function is implemented only when the device is not being used for a specific amount of time. The amount of time can be set within the H1N's menu.
