The Tiffen 55mm Gold Diffusion/FX 2 Filter diffuses strong light entering the lens and produces a glowing effect. While the resulting image appears softer and ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by spreading the light more evenly, a soft glow is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image when shooting without a filter. In addition to the diffusion provided, a gold tint is also added to the image giving more warmth and helping to balance skin tones. This filter has a 2 density, providing a subtle amount of softening.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the lens hood attach to the front in reverse?

A: Yes, you can connect the Sony ALC-SH131 Lens Hood included with the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens on reverse.

Q: 2. Do you notice any noise on the blades when focusing at f/8 (A mode, continuous) using it with A6000?

A: When the blades initially begin to move there is a little noise, but nothing pronounced. I experimented with additional modes and found that the blades produced varying levels of this noise as they moved to focus.

Q: 3. When this lens is used on a6000, I saw the SteadyShot cannot be turned on. Is this normal?

A: No- something is not working or you are not setting the correct function. You have to set the focal length for stabilization first pressing the rear wheel button and then dialing in the focal length.

Q: 4. I am traveling on vacation to Europe. How does this lens differ from the Canon 24-105 L 4D lens that comes with the Canon 5d Mark 2 camera? What are the pros and cons? I already have that lens.

A: The 17-55mm 2.8 lens will be specifically for a crop sensor camera. It will have an equivalent focal length of about 24-85mm on APS-C crop sensor. You would not be able to use the 17-55mm on your 5D3, due to the smaller image circle. The closest equivalent for full frame would be the 24-70mm 2.8 L:Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM LensB&H # CA247028LII Mfr # 5175B002I would stick to the 24-105mm, unless you need a faster aperture.

Q: 5. is it compatible with canon 550D?

A: Yes

Q: 6. In one review video, a guy showed an interesting front protector for this lens - a 49mm filter adapter whose outer diameter is exactly the same as the diameter of the lens body. It was some kind of vintage thing that is no longer in production. Any idea what kind of modern adapter might serve this purpose?

A: We don't have such a device--we only have 49mm protective filters for this lens.

Q: 7. I'm wanting a lens for my granddaughter's wedding and other future events is this the lens for my Canon 80d?

A: Yes, works with my 80d. I love the lens!

Q: 8. Is this Lens compatible with the Sony FS700?

A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the Sony FS700.

Q: 9. is there much of a noticible difference when using this lens vs the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens?

A: The main difference with this lens is the Stepping Motor for quiet autofocus while shooting video. Otherwise, the optical quality is the same as the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II.

Q: 10. I have a Sony A7 with the FE 28-70MM lens that came with the camera package. Although it's an ok lens I'm looking for a prime lens that would produce even better pictures. Is this 55mm lens my best option for a prime lens? It seems to have very good reviews but want to make sure it's my best option on the A7 before spending $1000. Thanks!

A: The Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 is an excellent lens and is tack sharp. This will be a fantastic prime standard lens for the Sony A7.
