Q: 1. How are the 8200i and the 8100 different? The specs look identical.
A: Integrated Infrared Dust/Scratch Removal?
Q: 2. Will it work with Mac OS Big Sur?
A: Yes. Check out VueScan which has a driver for Big Sur. I’ve been using VueScan for that scanner for a number of years with multiple Mac OS versions. I’ve found that it works best if all wires are plugged in and the scanner is turned on before opening VueScan
Q: 3. I just bought this scanner. I can't seem to get higher than a 6 Megapixel scan from it. is it possible to go higher? I was hoping to get at least a 12Megapixel scan for larger prints.
A: Set the Res slider in the SilverFast Scan Dimensions dialog to 3600 ppi and select the Photo Quality Output (300 ppi). You should get a file that is the equivalent of about 15 Megapixel image. If not please contact Plustek Support 714-670-7713 option 1 ask for Mark.
Q: 4. Will it still work if I use a usb c adapter? (as in will it work with my 2019 macbook)
A: Yes, you can use this scanner with a usb-c adapter.
Q: 5. Can you save directly to an SD card instead of using software and computer?
A: No, it's a strict scanner for pos & negs. It won't even work without using the proper/enclosed software via a suitable computer. It saves to a file on your computer hard drive, or as per demand, from where you can put it an any 'hard media', such as a SD card via an inexpensive card reader. Or an expensive, faster one for that matter. Most computer/laptops, however these days come with a USB port, so you could save your images here without further expenditure, on a USB stick. But image back-up on you computer is always a safer way to preserve important images. You can scan/save in TIF or JPG images. Jim Schultz, Kelmscott, Western Australia
Q: 6. Can you do batch scanning with 35mm slides? I want to just be able to insert the slide, push a button and have it scan all the negatives on it's won, instead of doing it one by one.
A: It does not have an auto feed. You have to advance each frame manually.
Q: 7. What's the best software for mac Catalina 10.15.6? One that works without constant tweaking.
A: Vuescan seems to be the best software.
Q: 8. Does this model plug into my computer during use, so that I am able to see what is about to be scanned?
A: Actually I don't use Software that comes with the scanner, its very bad, although I think you have to install the software for the drivers. I found that VueScan is the best scanning software and it does also the preview of the scan, so you can crop etc. And when you do the final scan, save it as raw format, then do adjustments in lightroom or photoshop as needed.
Q: 9. Is there a way to turn off the auto adjust features so b/w film negatives will scan "as is?" I have a cheap film scanner that automatically sets the black and white points so the histogram for the resulting image file always ranges from 0 to 100%. If, for example, I scan a negative with density values of 50-100%, I want the image file to contain values of 50-100%. I hope this makes sense. Thanks.
A: Yes. All auto adjustments and manual adjustment can be driven using the SilverFast se plus 8 application software that comes included with the scanner.
Q: 10. So the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE Film Scanner doesn't work with Mac computers, is that correct? If so what film scanner would you recommend for a Mac OS 11.6.4 user?
A: The Plustek 8200i SE scanner is Mac compatible with OS 11 and OS 12 (as well as Windows 11). They have updated driver software for the newer operating systems on their website.
