Reminiscent of classic 20th century lenses, the Nikon F mount Velvet 56mm f/1.6 Lens from Lensbaby produces a uniquely soft, glowing image quality that is well-suited to making expressive and ethereal portraits. The overall softness can be controlled by stopping down the lens while still retaining the smooth tonality of a soft focus lens. Compatible with FX image sensors, this slightly longer-than-normal focal length pairs with the fast f/1.6 maximum aperture to excel in difficult lighting and achieve a shallow depth of field with controllable sharpness. Additionally, for increased creative versatility, the lens also offers a 1:2 maximum magnification and a minimum working distance of 5" for macro shooting. Housed within a black metal barrel, this lens also features smooth, dampened manual focus control to further benefit creative flexibility. Consistent with Lensbaby's aim of purveying selective focus capabilities and a unique velvety image quality, the Velvet 56mm f/1.6 is a versatile tool that marries classical looks with contemporary control.

Portrait-length 56mm focal length is compatible with FX format sensors as well as DX format sensors, where it will provide an 84mm equivalent focal length.

Fast f/1.6 maximum aperture offers extensive control over selective focus and shallow depth of field, and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.

The unique singlet-doublet-singlet lens design renders imagery with a soft, smooth, and glowing image quality reminiscent of mid-20th century portrait lenses.

Softness can be controlled by stopping-down the lens: when stopped-down to f/16, the image exhibits a smooth quality with greater central sharpness.

A 1:2 maximum magnification ratio and 5" minimum working distance enable working with close-up subjects.

Black all-metal lens barrel with engraved aperture and focus markings.

Manual focus design with a smooth, dampened focusing movement is complemented by engraved focus distance indicators.

Manual exposure control requires stop-down metering and manual setting of the aperture.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this lens fit my Canon 5D Mark 11?

A: Yes

Q: 2. Will this lens work on the Nikon D500 and D7100? Is it difficult to use?

A: The Lensbaby Velvet 56 is compatible with both the Nikon D500 and the Nikon D7100. It will work in Aperture Priority Mode and your in-camera light meter will work. Or you can shoot in Manual Mode. It will be Manual focus. Open up the aperture to get more of the velvety soft effect and close down the aperture to get a sharp image with just the edges falling off.

Q: 3. Is the Lensbaby Velvet 56mm lens compatible with the Nikon D7000 camera?

A: If you buy the Lensbaby Velvet 56mm lens with the Nikon mount, then it will fit onto the D7000 (or almost all other Nikons using the F mount). In that sense, it is compatible. But it if your definition of Compatible means you expect to use autofocus and the auto exposure controls on the camera, then you must know that this lens is strictly a manual focus, manual exposure lens. One will have to focus the lens by turning the focus ring by hand and set the f-stop with the f-stop ring on the lens.

A: Sorry, I don't know. If you do get the lens you'll have a ball with it. One of my favorites.

Q: 5. Can the K-mount version of this lens be used on a Ricoh XR-P analog SLR? If so, will it be a true 56mm or would there be a crop factor?

A: This will mount to the Ricoh XR-P but you will not be able to take advantage of the Ricoh's Program Mode. This is a full-frame format lens so therefore it will be a true 56mm.

Q: 6. will this work on a canon rebel eos t5 1200d ?

A: This is a RF lens, so it would not work on a Canon Rebel camera.

A: The Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f/1.6 Lens for Nikon Z, will fit directly on the Nikon Z camera without any adapter.

The Lensbaby 56 Velvet has quickly become my go to lens. I am thrilled with the creative works I have been able to shoot. It is manual, but I found it very adapt to the manual aspect. If I think REALLY hard the only thing not so great is that the lens cap can be knocked off the lens easily.

I actually refuse to take off this lens. I use it everywhere. It can be a blurry mess stopped all the way down, but that can be a fun appeal if you're going for that artistic impression. It also can capture the light in the most beautiful sense when stopped up. I was seriously impressed. I brought this lens to capture some pictures at my friends wedding, and they are one of my favorite pictures to date. Every picture is a surprise - either a wow, that turned out better than I thought or an I wonder what this one will look like - and that's just the kind of photographer I am.

Bought for doing macro photography, especially for flowers, has a minimum focus distance of 5 inches with a 1.6 aperture. It can be used for portraits, has a beautiful bokeh. The lens is solidly made, metal construction, even lens cap is metal. It is a manual lens, manual focus, aperture, it has no electronic connection to the camera. Easy to attach & remove. Though when doing close up photography I normally use manual modes anyway.

I've been looking for ways to do more creative photography and this lens has provide me with a way to do this. The bokeh is amazing and easy to achieve. The image can be sharp at the point of focus, then spreads out into a diffuse background as if the subject is emerging or submerging into a spatial dimension filled with nuances of color, or grisaille if you use black and white. As most users say, this lens is fun.

The Lensbaby Velvet is a great lens for portraits. Fast and efficient -it does the job. I haven't done much with it yet but I am looking forward to putting it through it's paces soon.

The Lensbaby Velvet 56 was just about the last type of lens I ever thought I would own but there was something so alluring about the silver finish, the stylish form, and the possibility of greatness that I just had to see one in person. When it arrived I locked my office door and proceeded to unbox it. Right away my very first impression was this is a quality piece of craftsmanship and I knew that it wouldn't be going back. My first images were too soft at f1.6 but with a little experimentation I was getting great images with a bokeh to die for. Another thing I really love about this lens is the throw of the focus ring and the fact that it's dampened. It's going to stay wherever you put it no matter what, and the fine control with such a long throw is like a return to yesteryear. I also thought that the lack of electronics was going to drive me crazy but it's had just the opposite effect-I've had to slow down, check my histograms, and experiment with various f-stops. This lens is every bit as versatile as any single lens I've ever owned. The close up ability is amazing and with an extension tube and wide aperture it's really unbelievable. I can't wait to try this lens with some focus stacking. The Lensbaby Velvet 56 has rekindled my love of manual focus, and is going with me everywhere. To be fair there are things I don't like about it: in bright sunlight the glare off the silver is blinding and my aging eyes have a difficult time reading the f-stops.but hey, this lens gets five stars ! ! !

I bought this lens not sure if I was going to like it or not, I have had mixed fealings about other Lensbaby products I own. Turns out it's one of my favorite lenses now! I'm so glad I bought it. I recamend stoping it down to f/2 or f/2.8, somtimes even f/4 if your going for a soft focus effect, f/1.6 is really extrime. From f/8 through it's smallest aperture f/16 it's really rather sharp, although the images are sharp they have a deffirant feal about them thats hard to discribe other then to say it's very pleasing. Don't listen to people out there that make the stupid comment why don't you just use an inexpensive soft focus filtter because they obviously have never used this lens. The look is WAY different, I bought a soft focus filter used it once and now it sits in my junk equipment graveyard in one of my closets, the Velvet 56 gets used almost everyday.
