Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the MixPre 3 II be used to timecode two angle different cameras and thus make them already synced in post?

A: Yes, the MixPre-3 II does have an internal timecode generator that you can use to sync timecode with your cameras.

Q: 2. If I use the 3.5mm jack output of this mixer to my camera, will the audio that the camera retrieves be a lesser quality audio than the audio files on the onboard SD of the mixer?

A: The audio quality of the files recorded on the SD card will most likely be much higher than the quality of the audio recorded by the camera. It really depends on the audio recording capabilities of the camera.

Q: 3. Can this be used to sync a two-camera interview-via timecode out-through hard wired cables (since there's only one output)? Or would that require something like a tentacle sync?

A: The Sound Devices MixPre-3 II cannot be hardwired to two cameras' TC inputs at the same time.

Q: 4. Can I hook my wireless headphones to the headphone out via bluetooth?

A: Call the Sound Devices Tech support, the number is on web site. They give excellent phone tech advise.. They will have your answer. By the way, the mix-Pre 3-2 is the best recording device I have ever used. I have been in the business since the Nargra 3.

Q: 5. can this be synced to Sony FX3's?

A: Yes, the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II does have timecode and can be synced to the camera. However, the Sony FX3 Cinema Camera does not have any timecode input or output so you will need to use a timecode device like the Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator (B&H # TETE1MK2) or the Track E Recorder with Timecode (B&H # TETRACKE).

Q: 6. Is there an option to buy a Dan Dugan auto mix?

A: For this application, SoundDevices offers MixAssist for their MixPre series recorders. https://www.sounddevices.com/product/mixassist-plugin/

Q: 7. Can I sync timecode from my Fujifilm X-T3?

A: Thank you for your question. Neither the Fujifilm or the Mix pre 3 generate time code. You would need to get an external time code syncing device and input the devices into the mic input on camera and the TRS AUX in on the mix pre. I suggest using the Tentacle Sync Sync E Timecode Generator with Bluetooth (Dual Set) BH #TETE2

Q: 8. I know the unit requires 7.5 watts and 1.5 amps to power it, but what is the max voltage that the USB-C can handle? I would like to connect a LPN battery directly to the USB without having to buy the $60 battery sled.

A: Hello Michael. Generally, if you connect a battery to a device via USB-C, the battery and the device to which it is connected will negotiate the maximum voltage. The MixPre-3 II only uses 5-volts via USB-C. It will not negotiate to the higher available voltages.

Q: 9. Will I need to use a di box in order not to experience problems with signal loss/interference, given the outputs being unbalanced? I'm thinking of an ENG setting, recording directly into the camera.

A: Hi Philip. You should not require a DI box to run unbalanced audio into a camera. However, long runs of unbalanced audio (more than about 20 feet) are more susceptible to interference than balanced cables.

Q: 10. Does this unit respond to HDMI record triggers and HDMI timecode from Sony Z90 and NX80?

A: Yes, the recorder features a 1 x HDMI Type-D SMPTE Timecode Input.
