Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I hope someone can help me think ahead about what I can do with the aux input on the MixPre-6. My idea is that if I need to use channels 5 and 6, I can run a line from my Zoom F1 (which would have two mics going in) into the MixPre-6. Sounds easy enough, but am I missing something? Thanks for any insight.

A: Sounds like a plan!

Q: 2. Does it come with the MX-LMount battery sled?

A: The MX-LMount battery sled must be purchased separately. The MX-4AA battery sled is included with the Sound Devices MixPre3 II.

Q: 3. I have a question about how the hdmi record trigger interacts with pre-roll recording. If the recording begins with the timecode running would that mean that consecutive tracks would have overlapping timecodes based on the length of the pre-roll?

A: Not really as you won't be going over anything. When done you save everything as a file. If you wanted to redo something you would create a new file and then edit the files in Post.

Q: 4. Does B&H sell a 3.5mm audio output cable that terminates in 2 male XLR cables that will feed a professional video camera?

A: A breakout cable such as BH #HOHMX003Y could be used to connect the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II's 3.5mm stereo output to a pair of XLR inputs.

Q: 5. Can I connect this recorder directly to my GH5 so that when I am recording video the MixPre-3 is automatically recording sound? In other words, so that I don't have to remember to start and stop the MixPre separately from pressing record on my camera?

A: The MixPre-3 II uses record triggers via HDMI and/or timecode to automatically stop and start recording when the camera to which it is connected starts/stops recording. The MixPre-3 II should accept a record trigger from a GH5, but I would suggest testing this to confirm, as both camera and MixPre-3 II firmware changes over time can cause compatibility issues of which we may be unaware.

Q: 6. The specs say operating temperature of Mix Pre 3 II is -4 to 86°F . The Mix pre 3 goes up to 140°. Thats a huge difference. 86° is ridiculously low. Is that correct?

A: Per Sound Devices, the operating temperature range is -20 to 60 C, which is -4 to 140 Fahrenheit. I have sent a note to the web group for a correction. https://www.sounddevices.com/product/mixpre-3-ii/

Q: 7. Will Mixpre-3II stay in sync with a Sony A7Siii timecode after removing the hdmi cable (used to sync camera and recorder)?

A: No, the MixPre-3 II cannot be jam-synced via HDMI.

Q: 8. Do this device record the sound with the vido to the camera, or do we make it to the SD card in itself and combine the video and the sound through a program?

A: You have the option to record internally to the SD Card to sync up the audio in post production, send an audio feed from the 3.5mm Stereo Out of the MixPre to the camera, or do both at the same time.

Q: 9. How many tracks can be recorded at a time

A: Please read the description. It’s all there, less complicated than asking that question but for politeness here’s the copy and paste: Record up to six tracks of external sources (four channels via XLR-1/4" combo jacks and two channels via a 3.5mm mini jack)—as well as a stereo mix

Q: 10. The output is 3.5mm unbalanced stereo, can you recommend an in line preamp to XLR for sending the mix to camera?

A: You can use a 3.5mm TRS male to XLR male cable like the Kopul Stereo Right-Angle 1/8" Male Mini-Jack to XLR Male Cable - 3' (B&H # KORSMXM03) in any length to send the audio directly from the 3.5mm line output on the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II Multitrack Field Recorder to a camera's XLR input. Just be sure to set the input level on the camera for "line" in order to have compatible signal levels. A preamp should not be necessary.
