Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How many volts and how many amps does it output?

A: Hi Taylor, the MX-Charge power supply outputs 7.5W, 1.5A. If you are looking for a 3rd party solution be advised not all USB-C power supplies will run the MixPre series in full power mode. To avoid low-power mode, the MixPre requires a USB power source that flags that it can output 7.5W (1.5A). Many USB power sources can output 7.5W but do not flag that they can do so - these will cause the MixPre to operate in low power mode (maximum two phantom mics, no HDMI in). Use the following for full power:MX-Charge accessoryDual USB-A to USB-C cableApple USB-C power adapter New MacBook Pro USB-C portAny USB power source that flags that it can output 7.5W I hope this is helpful!

Q: 2. Does this hirose DC input sled work with the Sound Devices MixPre 10T as far as room for cable is concerned (i.e. without bending it too much)?

A: Unlike the MixPre 3 and 6, the MixPre 10T sports a Hirose 4-Pin DC input connector, so this accessory is not needed for the 10T.

Q: 3. How many minutes work after charging?

A: I use it for my Sound Devices 633 along with another off brand battery as back ups when my np1 that powers everything goes down and I don't have time to change to a fresh. Both xl series batts last about 4-5 hours just powering the 633 and a boom for phantom power, I don't have them set up to power the receivers or hops. Again that's what I use them for, your mileage may vary if you are using for another purpose.

Q: 4. Does this provide power regulation when used with a V-Mount battery? I don't see a recommended voltage range in my MixPre-6 manual.

A: This will regulate power of an external battery to properly run the mixpre6.

Q: 5. Will this run a Sony camera? Some non-Sony batteries do not.

A: If the Sony camera takes NP-F batteries, the Sound Devices XL-B3 Lithium Ion Battery should be compatible, as it is an NP-F-type battery.

Q: 6. If you use rechargeable batteries in this, can they be charged overnight by connecting the MixPre3 to a USB port?

A: No you can power the recorder via USB while recording or via the rechargeable AA batteries, however they need to be charged with their own charger outside the recorder.

Q: 7. Is it normal for this charger to take 3 hours to fully charge a battery?

A: Hi Robert, It requires 220 minutes to fully charge an empty battery pack. However, the charging time may differ depending on the condition of the battery pack or the ambient temperature. -Jerome

Q: 8. Will this work on the Watson NP-F970 High-Capacity Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (7.4V, 10,050mAh) ??? BH# WANPF970

A: Yes it will. This will charge other sizes of NP-F style batteries like the NP-F970.

Q: 9. How long will it takes to fully charge a Sony F970 Battery?

A: On average, it should take between 3-4 hours to fully charge.

Q: 10. Does this work as well with the MixPre-3 II?

A: Yes it does.

The Sony charger that came with my camera is a solid device but it requires a 110v outlet to operate. I chose this lightweight charger because it works in a 110v outlet but also has plug that fits into the cigar lighter of my car, so I can charge batteries on the fly. (I'm old enough to say cigar lighter in my car instead of the newer term, Power Outlet or whatever term they use now.)

The LED glows red when charging and turns to green when the charge is complete. On top of it all, the price is astoundingly low, making this a valuable and practical accessory.

This is an AC adapter for the Sound Devices MixPre-3 and MixPre-6. Like the MixPre itself, this adapter is well made and of excellent quality. It comes with adapters for outlets throughout the world. Everything that Sound Devices makes is first rate and this is no exception.

They charge a little bit slowly (but by no means as glacially as some other brands)--I use these for overnight charging the day before a shoot. My strategy is to have lots of batteries so I don't have to worry about charging on a shoot, so these work great, because you can get a couple of them foe the price of one more expensive charger.

If you do any in-house/studio work with MixPre-3/6, this power supply is the way to go. I didnt even realize it existed until I was searching the Sound Devices website for a better field power option. (Side note: I use a 20,100 mAh Type-C RavPower for the field and it works great.)

Before I discovered this charger I was using the dual USB Type-A Y cable that comes with the MixPre-3, and powering it with two Apple 12w iPad chargers, which I already had anyway. For $40, this is way cleaner.

I read a couple of the comments about the flimsy cable, and mine seems pretty sturdy actually. Maybe they did an upgrade on this at some point into the product cycle.

I purchased this for my Sound Devices 702 recorder. The battery the recorder comes with is 2,000 mAh, so this, at 6,600 mAh, is quite a bit higher capacity. While I have not yet used it extensively, I can definitively say right now that this battery is fantastic. It seems to last way longer than it should. Even after hours of recording it's still not dead. Of course, it's worth noting that this higher capacity will greatly increase charging time as well as running time. Also, the battery is physically much larger than the one that comes with the 702, so make sure that whatever case you are carrying the 702 in has room for it to protrude from the back of the recorder, as it is not flush with the unit like the stock battery. In short, it's a high capacity battery that does exactly what it's supposed to do.

I bought this battery a few weeks ago and it worked out great for me. I have 2 of the original batteries that came with my 702 recorder but this is the battery I go to now. When I'm in the field I can't always guarantee access to AC to charge my rig , or even the time to charge, so having this has really put my mind at ease. Also, If I get to a job and find that the wall power is dirty I can switch over to the XL-B3 and not worry about running out of juice half way through the event. At first I was a little put off by the price but now that I have used it I love it. I was also happy to find out that my 702 still fits nicely into my Porta Brace AR-7B when the XL-B3 is connected. I would and will buy this battery again.

I use this with a MixPre-3 and a hirose-to-d-tap cable.  Works as expected.  Its awesome to be able to power the MixPre off camera battery.  Would buy again.

Only suggestion I have is that if you do use this to power your MixPre, and if you feed a signal back into your camera (i.e. not just record to the MixPre, but also send a scratch track signal from the MixPre to the camera), then you will want to get a ground loop isolator to put in your signal chain.  Otherwise the in-camera scratch track will have interference noise.  (The internal MixPre recording remains pristine.)
