Also, this had his top loading, while the previous heads were rear loading, as in, you slid the plate in from the rear.But to answer your question, no this is not the same plate.But to add to it, yes you can use your old plates on this new head and vice versa, they are interchangeable. A: The adapter is a plate that fits into the pan head and is much wider than the Arca Swiss heads. To make it work, you either have to screw the plate into the hole on the Arca Swiss L-bracket or permanently mount an Arca-swiss type clamp to the Manfrotto adapter plate with screws. (I prefer the former.) Having said that, I mount the the panhead on my RRS tripod with a dovetail plate screwed into the bottom of the panhead and use a RRS clamp on top of the tripod.

It fits perfectly and I can't complain except for the fact that the Befree may be a tiny bit too light for video work in the field (but I'm really satisfied so far). As for your carbon fiber, I wouldn't know; maybe it'll be too light or maybe you'll find a way. But to answer your original question: yes it will work with the Manfrotto Befree.
