Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is wrong with the lens in the 1st place for it to require refurbishing? Did someone own it prior and had performance problems with the lens?

A: The only reason a lens or whatever piece of equipment is refurbished is because something was wrong with the lens in the first place. Could be the focus motor or any other part inside the lens. If the lens was refurbished by Nikon USA, I wouldnt worry about the lens. It was renewed to factory condition and certainly looks like new. If the price difference between the refurbish and a brand new one is significant for you, go for it, buy it. Now if you are not sure, just buy a brand new one. Its just money!

Q: 2. Us or gray market?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens (Refurbished), B&H # RBN241204GAF, would be a refurbished lens from Nikon USA, and includes a Limited 90-Day Warranty from Nikon USA.

Q: 3. Do you know of a lens case that fits the 24-120mm lens with a hood either in normal position or reversed? I like to keep one on my belt or bag to make it easy to change lenses. My measurements on the lens slightly exceed those on the Nikon website even removing the hood and rear cap.

A: I have had much success with the Lowe Pro slim lens pouch This pouch will easily house the 24-120 lens with the lens hood mounted forward AND it easily accommodates the width of the Nikon 14-24 wide angle lens and the length of the Nikon 70-200 mm (Lens hood must be reversed to fit in this pouch with the flap shut). This LowePro lens pouch is very secure, is well padded and it has the added advantage of storing in a more folded position. This pouch is highly versatile and highly recommended.

Q: 4. What is the minimum focusing distance at 120mm? I was wondering if this would be used for shooting wedding rings etc.

A: 18 inches. Highly recommend camera on a tripod, aperture mode, manual focus at F4 then change to highest F stop your lighting permits (without moving the camera), minimum ISO setting and use timed shutter release. Also, to capture correct ring colors make sure your white balance set to actual light conditions.

Q: 5. Why does it come in white box instead of regular packaging?

A: The product comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's packaging. It includes all the manufacturer's accessories. It also comes with the standard Nikon warranty.

Q: 6. What is the Nikon model # for the hood that fits this lens?

A: Nikon HB-53

Q: 7. How does the 24-120 fare as an only travel lens for hand-held, on-the-move shots? Thanks.

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens is a great choice for a one lens system for traveling. The focal range is quite extensive while the size of the lens is relatively small. The fact that it has a constant aperture of f/4 is also a positive factor in this decision. Excellent lens!

Q: 8. will this lens work with a nikon 1.4 or1.7 teleconverter?

A: No, the Nikon AF-S 24-120mm f/4 G ED VR does not accept teleconverters.

Q: 9. Does the lens come with an HB53 hood?

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens come with a Nikon HB-53 Bayonet Lens Hood.

Q: 10. Warranty

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens includes a Nikon USA one year warranty.

Used it for a wedding first time out of the box. Performed beautifully. Never took it off my D300. Good zoom range covering all the bases. Constant f/4 and VR allowed me to hand hold at 1/15 sec. with good results. Great investment.

I use this lens on my Nikon D7000. This is my standard lens for normal shooting situations such as typical indoor/outdoor photos. The VR feature makes it very practical for off-hand shooting. It is also very sharp with the f4 across the complete range. I was tempted by the 24-70 f2.8 but that lens does not have VR. I've also found that the additional reach beyond 70mm comes in very handy and doesn't require me to switch to my 70-200 so frequently. I honestly cannot thin k of any negatives with this lens for my photo requirements.

I needed a decent walk around lens to matchup with my D7000. After reading and comparing reviews from several sites including the goldmine of opinions on this one, I decided to go for this middle of the road lens. It's not a cheap lens, but it is not one of the top and expensive 2.8 lenses. The continuous 4.0 is plenty fast, and it is very sharp across all f/stops. The zoom is smooth and the lens feels solid. So far I am extremely satisfied with this lens.

I've used the DX 18-200 and the DX 18-105 and this lens is significantly sharper than either of those, even wide-open. Picture quality is exceptional, though sharpness does fall off slightly in the outer 10% of the field of view at f4. There is some distortion as well but that is easily corrected in Lightroom. VR works great - I even get some hand-held shots at 120mm sharp down to 1/15. Adequate for closeups - FX field of view is about 5. Overall, I'm delighted with this lens and will use it as my primary mid-range lens. Combined with the D600, the 24-120 is slightly larger and heavier than the D300 + 18-105 but I don't really notice the difference unless I have them side by side. It would be interesting to compare the D600 + 24-120 with the D7000 16-85; both offer the same range and the 16-85 is reported to be the sharpest of the DX mid-range zooms. One other thing - I've noticed that the 24-120, like the 18-105, has problems with flare at f10 and above when shooting a dimly-lit scene with a sharply-contrasting a dim scene with a highlight in or near the frame - e.g barn interior with open window, or Antelope Canyon.

This is a quality lens... very sharp, edge to edge. The zoom range is perfect for a walk-about lens ranging from a nice 24mm wide angle to a handy 120mm zoom. Yes, it has some heft to it, but most good glass does. I use it with my D800 and couldn't be more pleased. I chose it over the 24-70 after doing research and finding the sharpness of this lens to be equal to the 24-70mm and has the added feature of VR, also several hundred $$ less. I highly recommend the 24-120mm to anybody looking for a fantastic general purpose lens!

Using this as a walk around travel lens. Great for portraits as well as some architecture shots. Cool bokeh also, because of the f/4 through the whole zoom range. It's a bit heavy though.

This was a great lens with a great range of focal length. I mounted it on a DX body (D80), the image quality was good, but not great. I'd bet it's the DX body which is not so great. When I mounted it on the D800 FX body, the image was very sharp. Pros: - Sharp image on FX body - Work great with SB910 in low-light - VRII really helps - Longer focal length than 24-70mm f/2.8 lens - It's pro-grade with the golden ring on it - Cheaper than 24-70mm f/2.8 lens - Good portrait lens (see image attached) Cons: - Not very sharp on DX body - Not performed very well in low-light situation WITHOUT a flash light - F/4 instead of F/2.8 Overall I am very satisfied with this lens. It's cheaper than the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I like the golden ring on the lens. It shows the professionalism, LOL.

Purchased this lens as an upgrade to the 18-200 VRII. First impression was that of a heavy, well-built lens. I've shot about 1,000 images with it now and am completely happy with the color rendition, sharpness, and autofocus performance. With proper post-processing, I've gotten many images with this lens that are on par with those produced by my 70-200 VRII. I shoot with a DX body, so this lens provides me with the equivalent of a 35-180, a classic midrange zoom. It is very versatile. I don't miss the longer or wider parts of the 18-200 focal range at all, and my general impression is that wide open at f/4, my pictures have better color, contrast, and sharpness than with the 18-200, even though I have many images from the 18-200 that are very good.

so far so good. better than my old 28 to 105 zoom but of course more expensive so would expect it to be. focuses faster, heavier lens though but has the VR. just have to get a flash that will do the continuous shooting. right now if continuous, flash works every other shot.
