The Lens Cover for Canon EF 300mm NO IS f/4 in digital camo from LensCoat is made from 100% closed-cell neoprene, offering protection from minor bumps and scratches. This cover allows you to blend in with your surroundings and is useful for nature, outdoor, and sports photography, as well as photojournalists. The hood piece is designed to slide easily over the barrel, providing waterproof protection. It also acts as a thermal barrier, protecting your hands from the cold lens surface in low temperatures. Digital camo is an advanced, computer-generated, camouflage pattern modeled after the U.S. Army's standard-issue ACU pattern. It has a pixelated design to maximize visual break up and features small rectangular pixels of color, mimicking naturally-occurring dappled textures and rough boundaries.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi I have an older model that I bought around 2004. Is this lens the same as the old one or has it been updated in any way? My old one does not work with a Sony FS700 very well and I'm wondering if there is a newer version that would. Thx

A: The newest 300 2.8 model came in stores in 2010

Q: 2. What is the size of the lens hood of the 300 mm f/4L IS USM? Getting a Bahtinov mask for this lens but not sure how big I need.

A: It is approximately 3.50".

Q: 3. only interested in Auto focus and is it good for horses, dogs, waterfowl, and action shots?

A: I use this lens handheld for wildlife shots, especially birds, and find it offers enough speed to capture most images with my 50D body.

Q: 4. How much does the detachable tripod collar weigh?

A: 4.1 oz or 117 gram

Q: 5. Is this lens weather sealed?

A: The lens is not fully weather sealed as does not have the rubber gaskets. But since the lens is a prime lens it does not move in in out like most zooms so there is less chance of getting dust or moisture in it

Q: 6. I am interested in getting this lens for use on a Sony A7-II, as there is no E-mount equivalent. Does anyone have experience using this with a Metabones or Sigma MC-11 adapter? Does autofocus work with either of those on a Sony?

A: When using a 3rd party lens adapter and used to mate the lens and camera from two different companies, the issue always is the speed of the AF performance. As of now, even the very best is behind OEM performance. That being said, the best Metabones adapter with this lens should prove very satisfactory. While Sigma will not support the use of the MC-11 with other manufacturer lenses, many users have reported success with the MC-11 with non-Sigma lenses while an equal number have reported failure. Generally, the latest model lenses seem to work. We could find no reports of the MC-11 and this older design lens unfortunately.

Q: 7. What is the difference in image quality and functional automatic focus between the Extender 1.4x II and 1.4x III?(This is with a 300 mm f/4 IS L series lens on a 60D body.)

A: I have a 50D Canon Camera and the 1.4 III Extender. When used with the 300 mm lens I have no problem with the auto focus and there is minor image quality deterioration. You lose one stop on your aperture. It really is a great combination.

Q: 8. Can you auto focus with the 2.0xiii extender ?

A: Yes and no - just tried it a few weeks ago. It worked, but extremely slowly and sometimes didn't focus on what I'd want, so I find manual focusing with the 2x is easier. By itself though, the 300 4.0L is fast at focusing.

Q: 9. Does the 300mm f/4.0 IS USM lens work with an extender 1.4x II on a 60D camera body?

A: Yes, the 300 mm f4 IS lens will function very well with a 1.4 X extender. It will slow the auto-focus down, but it will still auto-focus. That combinations worked very well for me while shooting wildlife, with the extra bonus of being very close to being a macro lens. The extender doesn't change the close focusing ability of the lens, so you have a 420 mm lens that focuses down to just under 5 feet.

Q: 10. Has anyone tried this lens paired with the Canon 5DS?

A: It works very well on the 5DS.

I have been taking photos of birds with the lens so far. It is great. I have been able to take the photo and then crop some of them down to get in really close. I am thrilled with it.

I attach this lens to my 5D MarkII. The tripod mounting collar makes this lens fit quite comfortably on my tripod. I used my 1.4x EF Extender III (Teleconverter) with it and I got great shots of the moon at night. Handheld, the 2-setting IS makes this lens great at events when I am far away from the subjects. I would love to have gotten a longer lens or an f/2.8 stop, but I just could not justify the cost for my needs. Anyway, I have not found a need at this length for a faster lens. I am either on a tripod or shooting with this lens during the day. As for all of my L lenses, the images are beautiful right out of the camera. Color and sharpness are great on this with, and without the extender. I'm curious to try this lens out on my 50D but for now, it's attached to my 5D2 when I need that extra zoom length. I opt for prime lenses because of the weight and frankly, I just wasn't interested in that 70-200mm lens that most people seem to like. This lens completes my entire focal range needs. I have a 14mm f/2.8L for my ultra wide angle landscapes, 24-70mm f/2.8L walk around or 24-105mm f/4.0L, 135mm f/2.0L and this baby. The only lens I think I would like to add, would be the 85mm f/1.2L for indoor natural candids and portraits. I did not get the 2.0 teleconverter because of the reviews, but I know some have and are very satisfied with the combination. I am completely satisfied with this lens and I would suggest anyone to take advantage of the Canon rebates offered when purchasing this lens. You get what you pay for and this lens proves that. it's on the heavy side, but it's not a walk-around lens, it's a specialty lens and I am ready to haul this bad boy around when circumstances call for it. The shots that I bring back make it well worth it.

I was debating on selling my EF 70-200 f/4L USM in order to upgrade to the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM but am so glad I got this instead. This is much faster than the other at 300mm and is much easier to manage than that beast. Even with the 1.4x teleconverter this lens is still sharp and still a light-gathering monster at 420mm f/5.6! If I had the decision to make again, I would. Pairing this with the EF 70-200 f/4L USM was an inspired choice.

I use this on a 50d. I'm not a photographer, but a bird watcher that likes to photograph them. I was running into limitations with the 70-300IS (non-L)...so went for this. It takes very sharp pictures, great color and contrast. It is a great balance of quality, price, and weight. Weight was important to me, as I prefer to hike and bird watch without a tripod. I have paired this with the 1.4x tc, and love that combo. My keeper rate for bird pics is noticeably higher than before. I chose this lens over the 400mm f/5.6 due to the IS, and closer minimum focus distance, as I like to photograph insects also. But you probably can't go wrong with either. I do notice the clunky sounds of the IS, as others have reported, but it is not a big deal. There really aren't any cons - of course other lenses may have more reach, faster aperatures, or better IQ, but not at this price and weight.

I work for the local newspapers and decided to invest in a longer lens especially for shooting sports. This is reasonably priced for an IS lens. Have used it a few times and I'm getting great results- sharpness, color, contrast all better than my 70-200 2.8. Lightweight enough to handhold. Love the built-in hood. Only negative is that it could be better in low light, but I think that's the camera body(7D) issue, not the lens.
