Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens fully compatible with the Nikon D7000?

A: Yes

Q: 2. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D2X or with the Nikon D800?

A: The Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6 lens is compatible with the Nikon D800, but technically not with the Nikon D2-series of cameras. To elaborate, E-type lenses (electromagnetic diaphragm) on the Nikon D2X will have their aperture stay at wide-open (likely not an issue for most people) and are not officially compatible according to Nikon, but can still be used.

Q: 3. Does this lens work in the D3 - D4?

A: Yes, and really well as it's a FX format lens.

Q: 4. will this lens work with the TCE 14II? I believe the current 1.4 teleconverter is version III.

A: Yes, the lens will work with both versions. Note that only certain camera bodies support the E version lenses, but assuming you have a compatible camera, either the TC 14E II or III will work with the 200-500mm lens. Note also that with either T, autofocus will work only with cameras that maintain AF at apertures of f/8 or larger. Nikon has a teleconverter compatibility chart on their website that provides useful information on this. Various sites on the internet that do tests of lenses and TC's suggest that image quality is slightly better with the TC14E III versus the TC 14E II. I have both, and find the results of both usable. I also find some minor image degradation using the TC versus the lens alone, and find that my AF response is slower with the TC, particularly with fast moving subjects. Your results may vary.

Q: 5. actual dimension of Nikon 200-500 mm with and w/o hood?

A: With the hood it is 14 3/4 inches, without the hood it is 11 1/2 inches.I am very happy with this lens.

Q: 6. will this lens work with my Nikon 7200 AND is it suitable for shooting the Northern Lights ?

A: Yes it will work, but not appropriate for NL, I would recommend a wide zoom or wide prime for that purpose.

Q: 7. Is this lens parfocal?

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR Lens is parfocal.

Q: 8. What size quick release plate (arca) should be used for this lens

A: I have a window pod that I mount the lens on to take pictures of birds from my from my car used as a blind. The quick release plate works fine when the lens is mounted the window pod. I am well pleased with the lens and the quick releases that I use.

Q: 9. I get a lot of knocking and banging when I rotate the lens within the tripod collar. Enough for me to be concerned about the effects this jarring would have on the body and lens itself. Any one else having this issue?

A: I don't think you have a problem. I just rotated mine and found what appeared to be stops. or points of degrees of rotation, then I completely loosened up the collar and the lens came out of the collar exposing, what looks like brass buttons which are what is causing the noise your hearing as they align with their set points upon rotation. Not a problem just a learning curve. As I see it. As I read another review these are called rotation bearings that have milled exit paths. Sounds good to me. Perhaps not loosing the collar less might help?

Q: 10. Is Gitzo mountaineer 2542 strong enough to hold this len?

A: I have Nikon D810 with this lens and use Gitzo 3542L which is a little heavier duty, but if the 2542 is built the same I would not have a problem using it. I think it is a very good tripod.
