It is one of the main reasons (plus high photo-print-quality) that I bought this model; my ip7220 lacks this tray. The advantage is that the paper follows gravity and follows a pretty straight path, minimizing paper jams and misfeeds. The down-side is that paper left sitting in it may bend and warp over time; and it does leave the printer's innards open to dust and dirt.The ip8720 also has the bottom tray, a design used in most printers, dedicated, printer-only models as well as all-in-ones, from HP, Epson, etc., as well as Canon.
