Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I remove the screw and make it 1/4 20 female screw hole?

A: The Matthews 5/8" Baby Pin with 1/4"-20 Male Screw BH #MA7012 is fixed. For a female 1/4-20 thread on a baby stud you could use B&H # IMSRP112P.

Q: 2. hello, will the female end of this adapter fit on the extension arm of a c-stand (non-grip head side) so I can mount a shockmount/shotgun mic? Thanks!

A: YES

Q: 3. Other than the Matthews 4 rod for MICROgrip applications, do any of their other rods 6 , 8 , 12 , 20 ) come with a 3/8-16 threaded male stud? All photos appear to indicate that their longer rods are only tapped with a 3/8-16 female, but not a 3/8-16 male.

A: I have 4, 6, 8, 12, and 20 inch MICROgrip rods, with 4-8 pieces in each size. They all have Male threads on one side, and Female threads on the other, allowing you to screw them together to make any length necessary. I heavily rely on this feature for various car mount configurations, especially for stabilizing the top of the camera. I sometimes also use extra MICROgrip rods down to the car floor for over-the-shoulder car mount shots. For mounting the bottom of the camera cheese plate to the suction cups, I usually use the larger 5/8 rods, but adding extra MICROgrip rods to that basic mount makes it rock solid.

Q: 4. How long is this?

A: The length of the Matthews 5/8" Baby Pin with 1/4"-20 Male Screw is just below 4 inches.

Q: 5. For the 3/8" -16 rods, they cannot be joined together like the 1/4"-20 rods, right?

A: The Matthews MICROgrip Rod (20") is like the smaller rods but uses a 3/8 inch thread not the smaller 1/4 thread.

Q: 6. Could this be used to suspend a westcott flex 1 x 1 as an overhead light?

A: Yes, the MICROgrip Rod can certainly be used to mount a Wescott Flex 1x1. That fixtures weight is 7oz. and will easily be supported.

Q: 7. What material are these rod made of... Plastic or Aluminum or steel?

A: The MICROgrip rods are made of 3/8 steel material.

Q: 8. Will a super clamp spigot, such as the Impact Double-Ended Spigot BH #IMCA100 fit inside jaws of the MICROgrip Head?

A: Yes, the Impact Double-Ended Spigot will fit in the Matthews MICROgrip Head.

Q: 9. How thick is the rod. Is this 10mm and able to be used with the Feiyu AK follow focus II

A: The MicroGrip Rod is 3/8" which converts to 9.525mm. Not familiar with the specs of the Feiyu AK follow focus II.

Q: 10. What is the diameter of the rod?

A: The Matthews catalog states that the rods are 3/8".

I use these rods in various sizes to hold small reflectors for tabletop macro work. I screw them into cheese plates and use MiniGrip heads to help put the reflector exactly where I want it. Small one pound hand weights help to stabilize the rig. Thanks goes to Joey Terrill for recommending these.

I use this to add support cameras on hoods, doors and fenders for action shots. I also use it to support large diaphragm microphones to the inside of the windshield for an onsite recording booth for VO narratives. Also use with suction cups and mini ball heads.

Actually, both ends are threaded so you can put a set screw in either end, I replaced the male set screw with a shorter one to hold a go pro without looking funky with thread sticking out. Love these, there is a whole range of lengths.

I've built up two portable lighting systems for my audio follow cart using different lengths of microGRIP rods and accessories. Modular and very portable, this is a great system. For those of you who are old enough to understand this reference think of them as high tech Tinker Toys. You can build just about anything if you have enough of them. This is a durable, lightweight problem solving system for all your how am I going to make this work? moments.
