Q: 1. Does ES-1 work with Nikon D3300 and its kit 18-55 mm lens?
A: No unfortunately, Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter is only compatible Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor lens and the Nikon PK-13 extension tube.
Q: 2. Would this work with a Canon 100 macro or would I have to get close to a 60?
A: My understanding is that if you use a lens larger than about 60mm, you would need to add extension tubes between the larger lens and your camera to retain the entire slide dimensions within your camera's viewfinder.
Q: 3. Nikon specs say the ES-1 is 80mm long. Does the 80 include the 24mm extension or is the 80mm the collapsed length? Thanks.
A: There is no extension tube. The ES-1 mounts perfectly on the 40mm Dx macro lens and on my D5500 is great for copying slides. Flash is positioned with diffusers 1 inch from the ES-1 using TTL and aperature priority. I can do 6 slides per minute.
Q: 4. I have a Tamron 60 macro, and shoot with a Nikon 850. will this work with the ES-1?
A: This is made for Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor witch has 52mm filter thread and Tamron is 55mm, so you will need step up ring , but the 60mm will crop the slide abbot 10% that's the reason it will not work for me
Q: 5. Can you photograph 70 mm slides with this too?
A: I have only used it for 35mm slides, and it works fantastically. Focusing is not intuitive so be aware you will have to slide the tube out or in to achieve perfect focus.
Q: 6. Will it work with a Canon full frame and my ef 100mm macro?
A: Not without a 58mm to 52mm step down adapter ring. And you may need to get an extension tube to get the image to cover the whole sensor. It has a 52mm thread which fits Canon's 50mm macro lens but the 100mm has a 58mm filter thread. It does work really well on Canon's 50mm macro with a 25mm extension tube. I'm getting great results.
Q: 7. Do I need the extension tube PK-13 with ES-1 used with the 60mm Micro Nikkor using Nikon dslr with crop sensor?
A: No, the 60mm Micro-Nikkor lenses focus to 1:1 without an extension tube. And with a DX sensor, you'll actually only need less than 1:2 magnification if you're duplicating slides, because your original will be more than twice as big as your sensor. The extension tube will allow you to increase magnification, you'll actually need less magnification due to crop factor. I don't know if you'll be able to get the whole slide in the smaller DX frame with this setup (you'll have to experiment and see), you would actually be better off with the 55mm Micro-Nikkor, which is 1:2 magnification without the extension tube, closer to what you need for a DX camera to duplicate 35mm slides.
Q: 8. Will this work with an 50mm 1:1 and format size DX?
A: I am assuming you are using Nikon equipment and want to copy 35 mm slides at 1:1.By work, if you mean getting a 1:1 magnification with a 50 mm lens on a DX format, to copy 35mm slides - the answer is no. Because of the DX crop factor the lens needs to be further back to get a 1:1 magnification ratio. You need approx 26 to 28 mm more distance to get the 1.0 magnification. The ES-1 is designed for the 55 mm micro AIs or 60mm micro G lens with FX. Use a lens with a 0.67 mag ratio or more on DX and it will become 1.0 when multiplied by the DX crop factor 1.5 x. 1. You can use the PK-13 extension ring which will position the lens further back. But a regular 50 mm lens will be unsharp in the corners due to curvature of the field and probably cannot focus close enough. A flat field lens like the 55 mm micro AIs will work great with the PK-13 extension ring on DX. Be aware the PK-13 needs a lens with an aperture ring because G lenses will not transmit aperture data to the camera with the extension ring in between. 2. Alternately you can use the 40 mm micro lens on DX with ES-1 with no extension tubes. Because of the crop factor the equivalent is 60 mm which is what the ES-1 was designed for to give 1:1 ratio.3. You can also use the 60 mm micro on FX with ES-1 with no extension tubes. If you have a lot of slides and want quality, purchase a newer G type micro lens - 60mm for FX or 40mm for DX, and an ES-1. You can always sell the lens later.....or you may love it so much that you'll sell your regular 50 mm lens! I have the manual focus 55mm micro AIs and hardly ever use the 50 mm 1.4. If you already have a 55 mm micro AIs, purchase a PK-13 for use with ES-1 on a DX.There are many options and if you are unhappy with the purchase, confirm the 30 day trial/return policy before buying. Good luck. It's a fun project. Next topic will be lighting and white balance! :-)
Q: 9. Will the es-1 work on my Nikon CoolPics 5700?
A: I do not Think so. I have a 55mm Macro Nikkor Lens and a PK-13 adapter...Works fine but does get the full frame of a slide. Maybe 80 t0 90 %.From what I was told it was made for that setup ( 55mm Macro Nikkor Lens and a PK-13 ) ! It screws into the threads of a 52mm.I would also like to add that I am shooting with a Nikon 5200. That may make a difference as well because the size of the Sensor and distance from the slide to the sensor ( It helps to have a skylight filter ).
Q: 10. Hi there. I'm using the ES-1 adapter with a Nikon D7000 and the Nikkor 40mm 1:2.8G lens. The slides appear to be in focus when viewing through the camera, but the pictures I'm getting are not sharp, and I'm losing detail. I've tried manual focus, I've adjusted my aperture to various settings, but nothing seems to improve this. I've seen several reviews from people with the same camera/lens I'm using, and they seem to have been successful. Any suggestions? Thanks!
A: You may be trying to focus too close to the end of the lens. The ES-1 is adjustable for focusing distance. You could also use an extension ring on the lens to gain closer focus. Shoot at f 8 or 11 for best sharpness. Selective manual focus seems best and It also helps to shoot in raw and sharpen and make adjustments in post processing.
