A: The macro feature works within inches (I can almost touch the lens on the subject if I remove the hood) of the subject and has a clear focus. Like any macro feature you may have to assist with some adjustment with the zoom ring so that the auto-focus can clearly see your subject. I have not experienced the focal range going a stop darker at 70mm.
