A: The pan lock knob (part # J488) may be cracked. Either that, or the pan lock knob may be locked into place tightly, and the head is breaking free from the cetner column. It is difficult to tell without seeing the tripod/head combination.

A: This is a great tripod for both photographic and video uses, it is heavy duty and the the pan and tilt are very smooth, the only draw back a person might not like is that it is a little heavy but to me that's what makes it great it makes it very steady unlike some of those smaller flimsy tripods on the market. It telescopes to a great height and can even go down to about 12 off the ground and the center column can be reversed so you can mount the camera inverted to get even closer to the ground. Great price for a super versatile and rugged tripod. You won't be disappointed!
