Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this compatible with OS9 Mavericks on a Mac? If not do you know of any film scanners that are?

A: According to the manufacturer, this scanner would be compatible up to Mac OS 10.12.

Q: 2. I see that the product descriptions for the Plustek 8200i Ai refers to the inclusion of Silverfast 8. I see an answer to a question that Silverfast is a free upgrade. Presumably the package only includes the Silverfast 8. How does the upgrade work in practice?

A: All paid upgrades are done via silverfast website. In order to upgrade please review the following link. https://bit.ly/3ioTu4G

Q: 3. How is the compatibility with 10.10.5 Yosemite?

A: Yes: Plustek lists on their website that the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE Film Scanner is compatible with Mac OS 10.10.x (Yosemite) as well as the current Mac OS 10.11.x (El Capitan).

Q: 4. Presumably, when sliding old paper mounted slides into the machine, over time it is going to get dusty inside. Is there a way to open it and clean it or is that a chancy procedure (like trying to clean the dust off a sensor of an SLR camera)? What is recommended for cleaning?

A: Opening the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i Ai Film Scanner will void an warranty, One suggest was canned air. But I would be very careful as that can release Freon. Or you can try a blower brush.

Q: 5. Can I scan stereo slides with the Plustek? The stereo slides are 35mm slide film mounted in cardboard holders. The two images are mounted on a mount measuring 1 5/8 by 4 with 1 5/8 between the slide films.

A: Don't buy it..Horrible software.

Q: 6. I have panoramic negatives to scan from a Widelux that are 59x24mm. Is there a panormic film holder available for this? Or is it possible to scan them without a negative holder?

A: No this won't work for your panoramic negatives.

Q: 7. Does the hardware allow scanning directly into PhotoShop on Windows 11 64 bit? By pass Silverfast?

A: The unit offers no edit in paths but a end-user can set there destination path to be directed to PS.

Q: 8. Bought this 2 years ago; never got Silverfast to work with Windows 7 or 8; Silverfast (LaserSoft Imaging) refuses to respond to my queries. Any answers? Unless you have an answer, I believe the software maker is either inept or a fraud.

A: I am an amateur photographer and bought Silverfast Ai Studio 8 with a Plustek 8200i scanner about 18 months ago. I have an Apple iMac computer and have had no problems with loading and starting up the software. As others have stated there is a learning curve to be overcome in the use of this software. I have successfully scanned a number of excellent images from both 35 mm film and slides, which I have post processed in Aperture, Lightroom, and DxO Optics Pro. I have not had to contact Silverfast but have found a number of videos and how-to documents on the Internet and on the Silverfast website that have helped me learn how to get the most from this combination of hardware and software.

Q: 9. Will this scanner allow you to scan 126 negatives and slides? Is there a different tray available for 126 negatives and slides?

A: I'm not aware of a feeder that holds 126 slides. The feeder it comes with holds four at a time. The scanner itself scans one at a time. But it's pretty fast, I was scanning at half the max resolution (the files came out at about 4700px by 3100px) and I could do 126 in a single night of while watching TV.

Q: 10. Will the software load well and play well on a Mac Air laptop running OS X 10.9.5?

A: I needed to contact the software company to be able to load it from the internet because I didnt have a drive in the computer I needed it on. Once I figured that out it was fine.

Pictorico Ultra Premium is the perfect transparency film for contact print digital negatives. It passes UV light well and accepts ink allowing for subtle gradations. It is recommended by a number of resources as THE transparency film for digital negatives and I heartily concur.
