Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Is this unit backward compatible to Thunderbolt 2?
A: This Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 3G Recorder, would not be backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 2.
Q: 2. Does this need an active Thunderbolt cable, or a passive 20 Gbps cable is enough for all HD formats it supports? Is the HDMI output HDMI 2.0 ?
A: Regarding the answer by BMD Specialist: Thunderbolt 3 cables can be either 20 Gbps (passive) or 40 Gbps (active). My question above was to know if the passive Thunderbolt 3 cable is enough.
Q: 3. Can I use this to color correct 4K 10bit footage on a Dell U2720P monitor?
A: You can color grade 4K 10 bit files in Resolve while monitoring in HD using the UltraStudio Monitor 3G. If you want to see your image in 4K, you would need a different output device and a 4K monitor of course. It is common practice by some to grade using a lower resolution display.
Q: 4. I'd like to use an HDR TV as a Computer Monitor for Color Correction in Resolve 16. Will this device allow me to create a 3D-LUT to correct the TVs Color Space/ Gamma? I'd love to read the User Manual/ Workflow for this UltraStudio 3G. Where can I get it?
A: There is no LUT capability in the Ultrastudio Monitor. But you can put a 1D or 3D LUT in the monitor out of Resolve in the Project Settings, so that should work as you want.
Q: 5. Which window machine this work?
A: This is compatible with both Windows 8.1 and 10 64-bit and requires a Thunderbolt 3 connection.
Q: 6. If connecting a Sony FX6 to this unit (into MBP M1 Max running Monterey), and whether via SDI or HDMI, how can one control which of the 8 tracks of audio the FX6 inevitably creates one hears or that one sends over zoom or whatever else? I typically will only want to hear one audio track. Is this possible?
A: You would have to go into the FX6's settings and disable any audio tracks you don't wish to be sent through.
Q: 7. Will this support 720P?
A: The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 3G Recorder handles resolutions up to 1080p60, including 720.
Q: 8. Is this compatible with the "thunderbolt" ports on new M1 based Macs?
A: Yes.
Q: 9. Is the device hdmi output compatible with certain monitors/screens? I connect to mine but there is no playback.
A: According to Blackmagic Design, you will need to send out a compatible signal for your monitor. Some monitors may only work with 60 fps, and not with 24/30 fps.
Q: 10. Can more than one of these be used simultaneously as ProPresenter 7 outputs from an M1 Mac?
A: It is possible that it may work on the Mac Mini or Imac but it is unlikely that this will work with the laptops due to how they set up the thunderbolt ports. Even before the switch to the M1 computers this was difficult to recommend as many customers reported that their computers would only see 1 of the Ultrastudios at a time. reach out to our sales team either via Chat in the top right hand corner or over the phone at 1-800-606-6969 and we can discuss some alternatives (such as NDI) that may accomplish this goal for you.
