Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How is this lens different from the previous 18-55 EF-S, other than a slightly smaller maximum aperture (f/4 versus previous f/3.5)?

A: There are a few differences between this lens and the f/3.5-5.6 versions. First, its size is about 20% smaller. Second is the lens extends in a linear motion when zooming in and out. There is no moving back and forth of the front element. I find this makes for a smoother zoom action when doing video. Third is the rear of the lens is sealed with a glass plate or element so the chance of getting dust in the lens is greatly reduced. Overall, the build quality is good for a kit lens. Optically, I can't say if it is better but I find it is a very good performer for such an inexpensive lens. It is surprisingly sharp and I haven't noticed the f/4.0 on the wide end being an issue. It has very good image stabilization so this helps. Plus, IQ is very good for a kit lens. I use it way more than I thought I would.

Q: 2. Water resistant

A: As far as we are aware, this lens has no weather-sealing.

Q: 3. Is the lens compatible with 80D camara?

A: Yes, the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens is fully compatible for use with the Canon EOS 80D DSLR camera.

Q: 4. Which country is this lens manufactured in?

A: According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Thailand. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

Q: 5. I have a Sony A7 with the FE 28-70MM lens that came with the camera package. Although it's an ok lens I'm looking for a prime lens that would produce even better pictures. Is this 55mm lens my best option for a prime lens? It seems to have very good reviews but want to make sure it's my best option on the A7 before spending $1000. Thanks!

A: The Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 is an excellent lens and is tack sharp. This will be a fantastic prime standard lens for the Sony A7.

Q: 6. I'm shooting on a Blackmagic 6kPro using a Canon 16-35mm lens which is spec'd for use on a full frame sensor, the 6kPro has a Super 35 which is basically an APS-C. If I were to use the Canon 17-55mm lens, which is spec'd for the APS-C sensor, would I see a notable difference in the field of view?

A: Field of view would be the same if the lens is 17mm full frame or if it is 17mm apsc, the angle of view will be the same on the Blackmagic 6kPro. If you need something wider you need to go to 11mm like this one. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1119028-REG/canon_9520b002_ef_11_24mm_f_4l_usm.html

Q: 7. Is this a good lens to use for headshots?

A: My friend Matt Watkins is a pro, Hassalblad $40,000 Camera, his 50mm is $9,500. He is a devils advocate and won't let you win an argument for any reason. But when he used my A7 with the 55 1.5, he said, I cannot believe this, how much? Under a grand, almost fell down. Have been taking pics since 14 in 1982. never owned any lens that can do this. Just don't take pics of your wife unless she is comfortable with every imperfection in her face, this lens shows you everything. You simply have to buy it, that's all.

Q: 8. Will this lens perfect for traveling? Thank you.

A: Hi Khanh, Yes, it is a perfect match for traveling. -Jerome

Q: 9. Will this work on a7r or rII?

A: Yes, this is a full frame Sony E mount lens and will fit on both the A7R and A7R II.

Q: 10. Will this lens with STM work on a Canon EOS Rebel T3?

A: Yes, it is fully compatible with the T3.

This lens may not be the L series lens but it is more than half the price. More than good enough for those that have been using the lens kit that came with many cameras.

This will be your go to lens for everyday shoots. It's a little heavy but manageable. The IS is a nice feature as well.

Just as good as any L lens. I upgraded to a 5D II from a 40 D years ago,but I liked this lens so much,I purchased a 7D just to use it. Great in my low light concert photography. Never a miss-focus. Always get clear beautiful pic's.

I use this lens in close quarters and dim light so it provides a sharp wide angle with very little distortion and is able to capture details in subtle lighting situations. I would highly recommend this lens to someone who is on a budget but needs a versatile wide-angle zoom lens.

The 2.8 is great, but does limit depth of field. Focus must be just right.

My first copy of this lens died after seven years (my fault, not the lens'). I did think of getting an EF lens as a replacement for it because that would have given me the option of moving to a FF camera at some point. But after careful consideration I opted for another copy of the EF-S 17-55. This is just a superb lens for a hand held crop camera because of its speed and it absolutely shines for landscapes photography when mounted on a tripod.

Suberp lens. I use it with Canon 40D. This lens is much better than my first choise - Sigma 18-200... Super image stabizator, even USM. I think it is one of the best lenses for amateurs and photo fans.
