Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Any limitations to how long the AX53 can film 1080p120 in slow motion mode (aside from filling up the memory card)?

A: It is actually, and in fact *continuous*, without a time limit other than remaining battery or memory card capacity. Note that it only records 120fps in XAVC-S 60mbps or 100mbps, so you must use a fast, high capacity SDXC UHS1 U3 card. I've had good luck with the Kingston micro SDXC 64GB linked below, which also work in and are required for 120fps in the FDR-X1000v action cam. Avoid the PNY models, they are not recognized as U3 by Sony cameras yet, for reasons unknown. The FDR-AX53 also has a 3 second 240fps burst mode called Smooth Slow Record, this is only recorded in AVCHD, and the quality is poor. Not unusably poor, but obviously not HD quality on a big screen.

Q: 2. What is the native ISO for the camera?

A: Sorry, the Sony user manual does not specify it

Q: 3. Is there a USB port so I can connect to my computer?

A: It has one but I've never used it to connect to computer. I personally find it easier to take out the card and place in computer.

Q: 4. Record

A: Sony FDR-AX53 Supports RECORDING FORMAT (VIDEO) XAVC S format:MPEG4-AVC/H.264, AVCHD format ver. 2.0 compatible:MPEG4-AVC/H.264, MP4: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 VIDEO RESOLUTION XAVC S 4K: 3840 x 2160/30p, 24p, XAVC S HD: 1920 x 1080/60p, 30p, 24p, AVCHD: 1920 x 1080/60p (PS), 24p (FX, FH), 60i (FX, FH), 1440 x 1080/60i (HQ, LP), MP4: 1280 x 720 30p

Q: 5. Do i need to buy a battery charger or can i charge battery via camera plugged In?

A: You do not need a separate battery charger. The AC adapter included with the Sony FDR-AX53 (BH #SOFDRAX53) will charge the battery when attached to the camera.

Q: 6. Does anyone know if this camera has flash bands aka rolling shutter when recording lightning? The flash bands are all I'm worried about.

A: I have recently used this camera to record an extended thunderstorm over Singapore and it captured numerous lightning strikes without any problem. There were some frames effected by the flashbanding; however, there were always some good frames along with the corrupted ones, so I got good results even if I might want to delete a few frames during the editing.

Q: 7. Playmemories mobile connect to iphone/ipad does not work. I keep scanning the QR code and setting up but then after rebooting the app like it says it still will not connect to camera. It asks me to rescan QR code... it's an endless loop. Anybody have a solution?

A: This sounds like a Sony Service question. I would suggest contacting the Sony Product Operation Support Center (POSC) at 800-883-6817. 8:00 am to 8:00 pm ET, excluding weekends and holidays.

Q: 8. Does thos unit auto focus on the subject as it moves towards or away from you?

A: Yes. it will either understand what you want on its own (it does very well with autofocus), but if you want something it's not tracking on its own, tap on tat subject on the screen, and it will lock the autofocus on it.

Q: 9. I've been waiting for something like this but I'd like to do some 4K shooting with some slow creeping zooms. Can anyone tell me if it's possible, and how many speeds does the zoom have in total?

A: For slow zoom, use Sony Compact Remote Control Tripod BH #SOVCTVPR1 MFR #VCTVPR1 it can be set to variable speed- the further you push the rocker, the quicker the zoom - such as the regular zoom button on the camera, or you can set it to slow-zoom, which is always slow. (You might get a bit slower by turning off slow-zoom, and pressing it very slightly, but as another responder pointed out, if you hit it a bit more, it won't be consistent speed. You can also use the T/W buttons that come up on the left side of the touch screen, these are not as slow as slow zoom on the remote handle, but also quite slow -- and consistent speed. You may be able to set the main (physical) rocker button on the camera to slow zoom (not variable) as well. Also, if you use the remote control that comes with the camera, the zoom button is quite slow as well. Slow zoom is always the most professional, as the people watching it can get a last glance at what they were looking at, and then see where youre going now; its much more comfortable on the eye. Except for sometimes when you nee to get to something quick; then people will be forgiving, when they realized what it was about. And sometimes professional movies seem to do a fast zoom on purpose, but only once in a long while.

Q: 10. Do I need to save the 'sidecar' .XML files?

A: Depending on which video editing program you're using, the XML files will be necessary. I'd suggest saving these files in a separate folder.
