Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will JBOD work over FireWire 800?

A: Yes, the Oyen Digital Mobius 5-Bay FireWire 800/eSATA/USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure can be used in JBOD over FireWire 800.

Q: 2. What drives do you recommend using to make archives - disks I will load up and then set aside as archives of my photo files? I am looking for less expensive drives than the WD Reds recommended here since I don't need them to perform 24/7.

A: Seagate specifically makes hard drives for archiving. They are designed to store data long term, but only be powered on to add, or retrieve data. There are 6TB, and 8TB options available here: http://bhpho.to/293t4iz

Q: 3. Will this enclosure support a 6TB drive? (HGST Deskstar NAS 6TB)

A: I'm using one with two 6TB drives and it appears to work fine.

Q: 4. HDD RPM and cache?

A: The hard drives are Seagate Enterprise ST6000NM0024. They are 7200RPM and have 128MB or cache.

Q: 5. Hi. I have 5 pieces WD Green 6Tb from the old DAS. What will happen if I install them in the Oyen Digital Mobius 5-Bay? It just won't start or what? These disks are not enterprise class.

A: None of the drives in my box are enterprise class and the largest individual drive is 2Tb. Running it as JBOD. Drives that were iffy in the G5 are still iffy in the Mobius. The biggest challenge in my setup is keeping the eSATA ExpressCard/34 in the slot. Not sure if thatll help you out but just give it a try.

Q: 6. What is the maximum transfer speed on this device? I know that it's usb 3.0 port has a maximum transfer speed of 525MB/s, but that's the port, so I was wondering if the hardware itself had transfer speed limitations (for example some external hard drives with 3.0 have transfer speeds up to 400MB/s due to its hardware).

A: I use it with the Firewire 800 port and WD drives. Works great for me.

Q: 7. Otra is posible to buy an A.C. Adaptor extra?

A: Nosotros no vendmos el AC adapter para este articulo.

Q: 8. In JBOD mode, are the drives hot-swappable? Can I eject one drive without ejecting or disturbing the others?

A: Yes in JBOD mode you can eject and replace a drive without disturbing the other drives.

Q: 9. The hard drive in my mid-2011 iMac is dead and I would prefer not cracking it open. Could I use this with a SSD and boot up from that, and use a HD in the other Bay for storage? There is no USB 3 port on the iMac so I am restricted to using firewire 800. I have heard conflicting reports as to whether that would be sufficient in order to use this with a bootable SSD. Thanks!

A: I have a 2011 iMac and the hdd died in it too. The internal sata cable that connects your hdd is about 6x faster than FireWire 800, which would probably make fw800 a nightmare for you to run off. Opening the iMac isn't as hard as it seems, just get the right tools, a clean table and check out some YouTube tutorials. Also make sure you get a new sata cable with the thermal sensor in it, otherwise your fans will run full speed all the time (I believe)..I also have the mobius and it's awesome for back up options.

Q: 10. Is it possible to install two 8TB drives in RAID 0 on this unit ? What's the max storage capacity on RAID 0 ? Thanks a lot in advance. Roberto.

A: I just installed 2 8tb seagate enterprise drives 2 days ago in a raid 1 setup. Only issue was connecting through USB instead of FireWire to get the drives into that configuration. Company walked me through it. They have great support. This is my second raid setup after buying the empty units. Very pleased.
