Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can it scan 2 x 2 slides which mount 127 film in 40x40 format? Slides were taken with a Baby Rollei.

A: no... only a single strip of 35mm film on an Plustek tray. The *only* other thing you can do with this scanner is use another of it's trays to place in 35mm transparancies. That's it.. I scans 35mm strips very nicely, but that is all it does.

Q: 2. Can I scan stereo slides with the Plustek? The stereo slides are 35mm slide film mounted in cardboard holders. The two images are mounted on a mount measuring 1 5/8 by 4 with 1 5/8 between the slide films.

A: Don't buy it..Horrible software.

Q: 3. I just bought this scanner. I can't seem to get higher than a 6 Megapixel scan from it. is it possible to go higher? I was hoping to get at least a 12Megapixel scan for larger prints.

A: Set the Res slider in the SilverFast Scan Dimensions dialog to 3600 ppi and select the Photo Quality Output (300 ppi). You should get a file that is the equivalent of about 15 Megapixel image. If not please contact Plustek Support 714-670-7713 option 1 ask for Mark.

Q: 4. Will I lose any functionality using this scanner with Apple iOS 10.10.2 Yosemite?

A: You will have to check with Plustek's website to make doubly sure on compatibility. I am still on vers. 10.6 and have not upgraded because I've lost quite a few machines on OS upgrades as the manufacturer did not bother to release compatible versions. I'm very happy with my scanner's performance though...

Q: 5. I want to buy one but don't know which model to get on so, what's the difference between the 8100, 8200i SE and the 8200i Ai? Just software bundles they come with?

A: The software is only bad in that it is complex. There are automatic settings that work well. Overall after doing over 100 scans I like the software and the scanner. The 8200 models come with the infrared scratch and dust detection and it works well and saves a lot of time with a healing brush. I like that the software will allow you to get a high res high density scan. The software is not plug and play but is powerful. I think the bundle with the full version of the software was well worth the price but the learning curve was big but pays off in the end. Silverfast has videos that explain the process and every tool. I have had several slide scanners and this is fast on low res scans but if you want to get the best of your old negatives you will do higher res scans and they take 20-30 sec. If you want low res copies of your slides and negatives then either look to the lower end models or send the stuff to a vendor that will do it for you. The lower end stuff is just as slow. If you don't care about resolution of the final jpg or tif and you will only look at them on your computer screen or small frames, send them out and forget the dyi of slide scanning. It's very time consuming but for decent res, it's worth it.

Q: 6. any update on a final Silverfast version? the Silverfast software Version 8.8.0r20 is unstable with frequent crashes [on Mac OS 10.15.5

A: Please contact SilverFast support with details of the crashes. They update the software very frequently.

Q: 7. I have a Dell PC with Windows 7 Home Edition and Photoshop CS6 extended. Would this machine be compatible with that set-up? (And yes, I'm hanging onto this version of Windows as long as I can...) Thanks

A: The OpticFilm 8200i SE Film Scanner comes with software for Windows 7. They did an upgrade when I registered to be compatible to my computer.

Q: 8. What size files are produced? I am looking to make large prints, say 20x30.

A: This scanner produces files roughly 130mb large which is not quite large enough to get a 20x30 print. There is a great software product you could purchase in conjunction with this or any other scanner which will increase the resolution so you can make larger prints called Perfect Resize by OnONe. It can work as a plug-in for Photoshop and Lightroom, or used independently after you've scanned your images onto your computer. See the link below for details:http://bhpho.to/VN0rYP

Q: 9. Is there a way to turn off the auto adjust features so b/w film negatives will scan "as is?" I have a cheap film scanner that automatically sets the black and white points so the histogram for the resulting image file always ranges from 0 to 100%. If, for example, I scan a negative with density values of 50-100%, I want the image file to contain values of 50-100%. I hope this makes sense. Thanks.

A: Yes. All auto adjustments and manual adjustment can be driven using the SilverFast se plus 8 application software that comes included with the scanner.

Q: 10. It should be obvious, but I don't see it specified anywhere. Does the purchase include the slide tray? Or do I have to purchase it separately? I would hope the former is the case.

A: When shopping our site you can always see what is included with an item by viewing the overview tab and finding the “In the Box” listing located on the right hand side of our web page. The included slide and negative holders are listed there.
