Excelling at close distances, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G from Nikon is a 60mm-equivalent macro prime offering a 1:1 life-size maximum magnification along with a 6.4" minimum focusing distance. Benefitting both close-up shooting as well as working at greater distances, the optical design uses a Close Range Correction system that maintains consistent image quality and sharpness throughout the focusing range. Individual elements also feature a Super Integrated Coating, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity and harsh lighting conditions. Additionally, complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor affords fast and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to benefit both stills and video applications.

Slightly longer-than-normal prime is designed for DX-format F-mount cameras and provides a 60mm equivalent focal length.

Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 6.4" to suit working with close-up subjects.

A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will the auto focus work with this lens on my D5200.

A: Yes, the autofocus will work on your D5200 when you use this lens. The Nikon 40mm f2.8 macro lens is an AF-S type which is the type of lens which has a built-in motor to drive the autofocus in your camera.

Q: 2. Will this work with a Nikon D60 and D90?

A: The Nikon AF-S 40mm f/2.8 macro lens is fully compatible with both the Nikon D90 and the D60.

Q: 3. Will this lens (40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro-Nikkor Lens by Nikon) fully compatible with the Nikon D70s, including autofocus?

A: The Nikon AF-S 40mm f/2.8 DX macro lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D70s, including autofocus. This lens is fully compatible with any Nikon DX format DSLR.

Q: 4. Will this lens work on a D4 and is it full frame

A: The Nikon AF-S 40mm f/2.8 macro lens, is a DX format lens. While technically you could use it on the D4, the D4 would crop down to DX mode. So, as this is not a full frame lens, it would not be the best choice for a macro lens on the D4. You might look at the Nikon 105mm f/2.8 macro lens (B&H # NI10528GAF). It would be an excellent option for a full frame camera.

Q: 5. is this lens compatible with my nikon dslr d3100?

A: The Nikon 40mm f/2.8G is compatible with the Nikon D3100.

Q: 6. I want to photograph some antique rifles. Will this lens put me close without making the rifles appear bent?

A: Remember this is a Micro lens - designed for getting REALLY close and holding amazing details (ex: shooting JUST the trigger of your rifles). To answer your question - no I did not see any wide angle bending BUT - it is a 40mm lens. So to fill a shot (horizontally) with lets say a 3' rifle - you will need to get back about 9 feet from the item. Hope this helps.Ray

Q: 7. Is this lens compatible with Nikon d200

A: Yes the Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D200 camera.

Q: 8. Does compatible with nikon fe How adjust aperture if yes

A: Unfortunately, the Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens is not compatible with the Nikon FE.

Q: 9. Because this lens' minimum focusing distance is 16.3 cm and the extension of the ES-1 is only 24mm, Am I correct that this lens will require an extenion tube to be used with the Es-1?

A: The Nikon AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens will attach to the Nikon ES-1. But you will need to play with extension tubes so you can focus. But chances are you will crop part of the 35mm slide. The ES-2 as is works with the 40mm lens, https://bhpho.to/3HfuNVJ .

Q: 10. Will this work on a D40/D40X?

A: The Nikon AF-S 40mm f/2.8 DX lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D40/D40X, including autofocus.

Great lens for the price. Looked at the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR, but as it was out of my price range decided to go with the 40mm. Not at all disappointed. Most of my macro shooting is done outdoors, so I haven't had an issue with the closeness of the lens to the subject. The pleasant surprise with this lens is the sharpness and nice depth of field. I've found I'm using the lens more for portrait and landscape shots than macro.

I use this to shoot 2D art on my Nikon D7000. I was using the 35 1.8 but switched to this as it is a macro lens which has less distortion. Color rendition seems to be better as well. Very happy with purchase.

You don't hear much about this lens. While the 35 1.8 is widely recommended, the 40 is only occasionally mentioned as a great walk-around lens. But the 40 has some great attributes. It's relatively light, has little distortion, is plenty sharp on modern high density sensors (I'm using it on a D71K) - and while they call it a micro I tend to use it as walk-around lens with close focus capabilities. It's great for capturing small architectural details then stepping back and shooting a street scene. But you have to like the (60mm FX equiv) focal length which I do.

I testeed it on random subjects, blew up some salt grains about ten or twelve times life size which I thought was impressive. I Shot the face of a small figurine so the final file image was full framr about 8 x 10. I use a D 80 and a D 5100, the lens is fully auto on the D 80 but not the D 5100. I'm planning to use it mostly for insect photos, and stamp and coin photographs and old photo copying. I think it meets those needs well.

I shoot product images to use on my website and this lens is perfect for getting all the little details my customers want to see before purchasing an item. This has the auto and manual focus to pinpoint where I want the image to be clear so when I merge the images I can create a perfectly focused item from top to bottom.

I am new to my Nikon D7000 (was film or phone camera for many many years)... I wanted a light weight lens that would let me take close up pics of tadpoles, butterflys...etc. This lens is perfect for the job... light weight, good price... and B&H handled ordering and shipping hassle free...

I've wanted a Macro lens for a long time to bring some additional enjoyment to my casual photography. While purchasing my new D5200, I decided to order this lens, too. From the very first shot, I was pleased with the purchase...it's great for getting up close and personal with many subjects while also being versatile for general photography tasks that are often handled by a typical 50mm fixed lens. Despite having a great Nikkor 70-200 zoom lens nearly always on my camera, this one will be worth the effort to carry with me, too.
