Q: 1. Can an extender, EF 1.4x III be used on the New 100-400 lens ?
A: Yes, you can use the Canon EF 1.4x III Extender on the 100-400mm lens, however you may lose autofocus.
Q: 2. The B&H video eludes to EF-S usage; specs indicate EF only. Can it be used with EF-S? Thanks.
A: Yes it can be used on all Canon DSLR's. However, on a crop sensor camera the focal range will be 160-640mm.
Q: 3. if you can only afford one or the other, which would you advise getting--the 70-200 2.8 IS with an extender--or this one? I do birds and wildlife, but equally important are portraits and landscapes.
A: I've never used a 70-200 2.8 IS, so I'm not going to be much help from that standpoint. The 100-400 will focus down to 3.5 feet which I really like plus you can put a 77mm Canon 500D closeup filter on and it gets you even closer. I have it on a 7D MKII and the lens focuses great...I could use more practice in framing birds in flight. The 100-400 would be a few hundred dollars less than the 70-200 plus extender. Be sure the extender will auto focus the lens so you are not a manual focus only lens. The one thing that comes to mind about the 70-200 2.8 is the 2.8 which would be great for handheld portraits/candid shots in natural lighting situations.
Q: 4. Will this fit a Canon 700D?
A: 700D is known as the Canon EOS Rebel T5i in the USA. It has an EF mount and so does this lens. It should fit.
Q: 5. Does the 1.4 extender work with auto focus or not? Has anyone tried it?
A: Robert, I high level answer is that the 100-400 II works fine with a 1.4x TC (best with vs III) with the following qualifications. 1. You will loose one f stop when you attach a TC to the 100-400 II. 2. The lens drops from an f5.6@400mm to an f8@400mm when you attach a 1.4x TC. 3. Most of the consumer grade Canon cameras only support auto focus to f5.6, so the lens will not autofocus at f8. 4. I believe the only current generation cameras that focus at f8 (on the center point only) are 1Dx, 5dMIII, 7dMii. Not sure about the 6d. Hope this helps. 3. The lens has a variable aperture from f4.5-5.6 based on the focal length you have selected with the zoom. The
Q: 6. One reviewer mentions ...Recently I have started using it on a monopod. The new tripod foot works loose and negates the stability. When tightened it gets loose again. Why would Canon design a brilliant lens and then weaken the whole thing with this flaw? For over 2 grand it bugs me to have to buy a replacement foot for this lens..... Has Canon improved the tripod foot design to avoid this issue or do you need to purchase an alternative tripod foot to prevent the issue? I am asking because I would want to use this lens with a monopod for some of the wildlife photography I like to do.
A: Canon has improved the tripod foot on this lens, which now allows the ability to remove it without having to remove the lens.
Q: 7. Is it import or USA ?
A: The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens, B&H # CA1004002LIS, is a USA lens distributed by Canon USA.
Q: 8. What adaptor would I use to mount this lens on a Sony A7RII body, or is it not compatible with that camera at all?
A: Sorry Bonny I am not familiar with any adapters that would work. I just don't know enough about the compatibility outside of Canon bodies. You might want to contact Canon directly with this questionGood luck
Q: 9. what comes with the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens - case?
A: The Canon 100-400mm II comes with both lens caps, the tripod collar, a lens case, and lens hood.
Q: 10. If anyone has purchased this lens recently, has Canon changed from wrapping the fabric lens case in plastic to not doing so? I know they used to but maybe they don't anymore. Just want to make sure mine is ok and not opened or returned. Thanks!
A: The fabric lens case is not always wrapped in plastic in the box of the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens.
