Q: 1. Does the 1.4 extender work with auto focus or not? Has anyone tried it?
A: Robert, I high level answer is that the 100-400 II works fine with a 1.4x TC (best with vs III) with the following qualifications. 1. You will loose one f stop when you attach a TC to the 100-400 II. 2. The lens drops from an f5.6@400mm to an f8@400mm when you attach a 1.4x TC. 3. Most of the consumer grade Canon cameras only support auto focus to f5.6, so the lens will not autofocus at f8. 4. I believe the only current generation cameras that focus at f8 (on the center point only) are 1Dx, 5dMIII, 7dMii. Not sure about the 6d. Hope this helps. 3. The lens has a variable aperture from f4.5-5.6 based on the focal length you have selected with the zoom. The
Q: 2. Will this lens work with Canon Rebel T1i?
A: Hi, the Canon 100-400 lens is designed for Full Frame cameras. This lens can still be mounted onto your Canon T1i which has an EF-S mount.
Q: 3. How easy is it to shoot vertical images when this lens is attached to a tripod?
A: Answer is yes. I would use a Swiss Arca compatible plate and a ballhead.
Q: 4. One reviewer mentions ...Recently I have started using it on a monopod. The new tripod foot works loose and negates the stability. When tightened it gets loose again. Why would Canon design a brilliant lens and then weaken the whole thing with this flaw? For over 2 grand it bugs me to have to buy a replacement foot for this lens..... Has Canon improved the tripod foot design to avoid this issue or do you need to purchase an alternative tripod foot to prevent the issue? I am asking because I would want to use this lens with a monopod for some of the wildlife photography I like to do.
A: Canon has improved the tripod foot on this lens, which now allows the ability to remove it without having to remove the lens.
Q: 5. will this lens make the 200-400 lens less desirable? I realize there is a huge difference in weight, size and price but not in focal length or f-stop. So, what is the huge difference in quality that counsels in favor of the extra weight, length, and price? thx.
A: The 100-400vii has excellent image quality and solid build quality. The portability compared to the much larger and heavier 200-400 makes it the wise choice for most users. But the 200-400 with 1.4x built-in extender makes the lens a 560mm f5.6 lens at the long-end, compared to the 100-400 at 400mm f5.6. The 200-400 image quality and build quality is equal to the very best prime lens, surpassing any other zoom lens on the market.
Q: 6. I have a Canon 1DMk4 and a Canon 100-400 Series ONE lens, a combo I use all the time for bird photography. I would like an opinion on how well my 1DMk4 combined with this Series TWO 100-400 would perform in comparison?
A: The newer lens has a rotating zoom as rather than a push pull zoom which might take some getting used to. When I shoot birds they are stationary not in flight. So, I'm zoomed to the max and am only concerned with focus. I use mine on a 7D which makes the max 640. The IS works good hand held. You might think about renting one for a weekend before spending your hard earned money. Looks like the new designs are moving away from push pull lenses though, so this might be your only option for a new 100-400.
Q: 7. I shoot high school football games and use the 70-200. I'm primarily interested if anyone has used both of these for this purpose? Pros / cons? Thanks.
A: I have also shot many h.s. football games, and the 70-200 is my choice. Rarely do I need the 400mm range, but I am shooting from the sidelines. If you are in the stands, the 100-400 would be better.
Q: 8. is this lens compatible with canon 6d?
A: Yes, this lens is fully compatible with the Canon EOS 6D camera.
Q: 9. Is this lens compatable with the new 7dmkii?
A: I have both the lens and camera mentioned (both purchased from B&H) and have been using them extensively for about a month. The lens is very compatible with the new 7D.I've found the combo is best for wildlife and night photos. I would highly recommend NOT using IS on the lens when shooting on a tripod or even handheld at high shutter speeds. I also found the 1.4 extender to soften the images quite a bit. Other than these too issues, this camera and lens combo is great....particularly for the money.I also have a 5D III that I have used with a 200-400 and a 70-200 lens. For nature images, the new 7D and 100-400 do as good or in some cases better job than the more expensive alternatives.Bob Taylor
Q: 10. Will the Canon 100-400mm F/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM work with my vintage 40D camera?
A: Yes. Current EF Canon lens mounts will fit 40D, 30D, 20D, 10D and the original digital rebel.... all newer digital rebels, and....50D, 60D, 70D, 80D, 5D thru 5DmkIV, 6D, 6DmkII, 7D and 7DmarkII manufactured since. However, EFs lenses will not work on full frame camera bodies such as the 5D and 6D bodies. EFs lens will work on 40D. (10D through 80D) and all digital rebel bodies.
