Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the second thunderbolt 3 port for daisy chaining another device ? I assume you can't connect it to two computers at the same time.

A: The Thunderbolt port on the OWC ThunderBay 4 mini is for daisy chaining devices only, because the storage volumes cannot be mounted on two host machines at once

Q: 2. can this support 4x 20 TB drives? also will any internal HDD work with this?

A: Yes, this OWC ThunderBay 4 mini 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array would support 20 TB drives. I would recommend this one: https://bhpho.to/3HXbjnz

Q: 3. Can I use drives that have eSATA interfaces with this, like the Western Digital 2.5" SSDs?

A: The OWC ThunderBay 4 mini cannot support eSATA drives. However, if your drives are just SATA, then they will be compatible.

Q: 4. Does this unit have a standard 6GB/sec SAT bus speed (600 MB/s)? In other words, you cannot really realize Thunderbolt 3 speeds.

A: OWC have not specified the version of SATA used in the ThunderBay 4 Mini, so unfortunately it is not possible to definitively quantify the potential for SATA bottlenecking.

Q: 5. Does the hard drives trays have a quick latch system or does it require screws when attaching a drive?

A: The OWC ThunderBay 4 mini 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array and Drive Enclosure requires screws when attaching a drive.

Q: 6. Is it compatible with an Intel P4610 SSD ? (BH #IN2KE064T801 MFR #SSDPE2KE064T801)

A: The OWC ThunderBay 4 mini 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array and Drive Enclosure BH #OWCTB3QMJB00 is only compatible with SATA drives. It is not compatible with a U.2 drive.

Q: 7. Can I use this enclosure with a computer that only has USB 3(5 gbps), not Thunderbolt? I know I won't get all the speed advantages of Thunderbolt, just curious about backward compatibility with older machines.

A: The OWC ThunderBay 4 requires Thunderbolt 3 speeds to operate properly. Any type of port that is less capable can produce unexpected results.

Q: 8. Can SATA III SSDs reach full speed when used as independent drives?

A: SATA III drives used in any configuration will not exceed the Thunderbolt 3 through put. Maximum speeds will be attained via a RAID setup.

Q: 9. Can I use Windows Storage Spaces to create a raid0 (simple) array on this?

A: Yes, the OWC ThunderBay 4 mini 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array and Drive Enclosure can be setup as a RAID 0 using Windows Storage Spaces.

Q: 10. Does this come with a copy of SoftRAID?

A: Yes, the OWC ThunderBay 4 Mini includes the SoftRAID setup and management software for a customized RAID solution.
