Q: 1. Can it scan film without a film holder? Can I just lay it on the glass?

A: Technically you should use a holder. With out a holder it will scan the full size and so exposures can be way off. Some do make there own holder. But that will take trial an error.

A: In a word: yes. 1. Open the Epson Scan software that comes with the machine. 2. Load your original in the scanner. 3. Click PREVIEW. 4. In the window that displays the preview use your mouse to select the area you want to scan. The process is similar to that for cropping in Photoshop. 5. Click scan and select image type, place to store scan etc. 6. Click OK to start scan.

Q: 3. I have heard two issues that need honest answers: Is there an issue with this scanner and Mac OS 10.8.5 or the even newer Maverick OS? Silverfast scan software gets rave reviews. Is there a practical difference between it and the software that comes in the box?

A: The V600 is compatible with OS 10.8.5 and 10.9 Mavericks.It comes with Epson's proprietary Easy Photo Fix technology, which allows you to make color corrections, dust removal, contrast, etc. Silverfast improves the scanning by increasing the d-max through a multi-pass feature. It also has customized scanning capability to target different film types, i.e. velvia, ektachrome, provia, etc.along with improving scratch removal, descreening, and unsharp mask.

Q: 4. Is this scanner compatible with Chromebooks (i.e., Chrome OS)?

A: I'm sorry but it is not compatible with Chromebooks.

Q: 5. Is it possible to detach or open the lid of the scanner to allow oversized books, objects to be scanned without the lid?

A: Yes, the hinges are basically pins in holes at the rear of the unit. The lid can be lifted completely off if necessary.

A: The Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner can be used on a computer that has a USB-C interface by using this adapter: https://bhpho.to/3w3FFjN. Currently, there are no flatbed/film scanner combinations that use USB-C directly.

Q: 8. I am currently using an older Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV to scan my B&W negatives. I use the Vue Scan software but the scans come out grainy and with poor contrast. I have to do a lot of tweaking in Photoshop or Lightroom but still don't get the look as if I work in the darkroom. I was wondering if this Epson V600 gives a much better quality scan than I have now or is there still a lot of tweaking after the scan to get good results?

A: Tough to answer this without seeing the images. It may be that the light source in the Dimage is going bad. This will add noise because the scans will be too dark and boosting the brightness will contribute noise. Consider a dedicated film scanner. The V600 will work but it won't give you the resolution you are used to with the Dimage.

Q: 9. I have this scanner in my office and although I was told it does a good job scanning x-rays we have been getting very poor quality scans. Any suggestions? Thanks

A: Silverfast makes a software called X-Ray 8. This is something that would help you with your needs. I am sorry, currently this is not something we carry.
