A: That is the million dollar question. Some photogs insist there be some protection for the front lens element, others say it affects the photograph. I had just purchased a 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens, with a B+W 77mm clear haze filter on it. I swear I zipped up my bag I keep my short teles in, and was putting it away when that lens came flying out and hit right on the edge of the filter from 3 feet. I heard glass break, and my heart sank. Looked at it, the filter was broken, but not a scratch, dent, ding, nada on the lens front. Unscrewed the remains of the filter, brushed and cleaned the front element, put the lens on my camera, and fired off several shots at all apertures and focal lengths to make sure I didn't just blow 2 grand. Worked just like unboxed. All my good lenses now have B+W filters on them, it did its job. I've never noticed any difference with, or without a clear protective filter on my lenses, as far as shots go. I'll take them off if I'm using a polarizer, or ND filter. One filter is enough.
