The 95mm B+W XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter is a solid variable neutral density filter providing an exposure reduction of 1 to 5 stops. The 0.3 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is also visually demarcated with dots that represent different density values.

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin mount which helps to reduce the likelihood to vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. The filter ring is made from aluminum.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to dial in differing amounts of density scene to scene.

0.3 to 1.5 density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a reduction of 1 to 5 stops, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.

Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.

Multi-Resistant Coating offers both protection to the glass and helps to improve light transmission and image quality.

Nano coating promotes an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.

Slim mount helps to reduce the likelihood of vignetting with wide-angle lenses.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. When stopped to the highest setting (5 stops) does the image degrade (sharpness, cross hatching)?

A: I've shot extensively with the 95mm, 72mm, & 67mm versions. You don't get any cross-hatching, but a definite vignette in the corners toward the 5 stop range when shooting photos. Video is not an issue as it crops to 16:9. Other than than, negligible colour cast & no sharpness issues.

Q: 2. does this affect colors in any way? does it desaturate colors as those cheaper ND filters?

A: Hi my friend, this is a nice piece of glass, for Shure you will have some impact in your color results. Minors, but they will be there. No free lunch. To be a variable in one piece you sacrifice something. Specially because it is affect the luminance that is very very important to color. But don't worry, you can easily fix at post, for video or photography. Best

Q: 3. The image looks extremely thick, is this filter thin?

A: The B+W 77mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter is 12.3mm (0.48 inches) thick.

Q: 4. Does this filter have hard stops?

A: This filter provides a hard stop at the beginning and at the end of the stop rotation. Please keep in mind there is no D-click between stops.

Q: 5. Does it come with a lens cap?

A: No it does not. I purchased an 82mm one separately.

Q: 6. How thick is this filter?

A: The profile is rather thin. It is similar to a typical UV filter in thickness. Which is actually thin considering all of the components involved in a variable ND. One thing to keep in mind: on my 16-35mm II (82mm filter), once mounted, it does not flush with the lens. It is slightly wider (3-4mm) than the tip of the lens. It can be pretty annoying if you're trying to mount a hood.

Q: 7. How can we clean the inside of the filter?

A: I must admit in a career of photography never needing to clean the inside of a rotating Polarizer. If for some really reason you actually had to clean the inside, that would be a task for a professional camera technician. No user serviceable parts are here.

Q: 8. Can this filter fit the Sony 10-18mm wide-angle lens?

A: That is a very wide angle lens and I would suspect a vignette problem. The answer to that would be to buy a step-up ring and use the 77mm version of filter. Now you have a filter that will adapt to any lens you might have with the appropriate step-up ring. By the way, the 77mm and is often on sale for less than the 62mm.

Q: 9. Does this filter come with an 82 mm front cap?

A: Received only the filter without cap

Q: 10. will this filter vignette with the Canon EF 16-35mm F4L lens?

A: I'm a Nikon shooter, so my answer is in that context. I no longer have my Nikkor 17-35, so the best other lens I could test it on is my Nikkor 12-24, which is a DX lens (also a 77mm diameter). Yours, however, is an FX lens, so I don't know how that may affect the comparison. I tested it on the D800, in full format mode. I noticed the beginning of vignetting when the focal length was 19mm. I did it a few times, and that was consistent. So, if this is in any way accurate, you can probably expect to lose a few mm of focal length at the3 wide end when you use this filter. I don't know if this filter is made in a thinner version for wide angle use. Hope this helped.

I bought this filter for my Fuji XF56mm to allow me to shoot at wider apertures on location. Great quality construction, just like you would expect from B+W. Works perfectly.

Absolutely amazing. I have Lee filters I have been using on my nikon lenses. I find them most helpful when using the big stopper and polarizer. But the B+W vario is extremely portable and I can keep it on my 24-70mm or 70-200mm at all times to give me the flexibility to shoot wide open at all times. Beautiful rendition, however at maximum setting there is some vignetting and some chromatic aberration - I have been able to correct these issues in post. I ordered this after I bought the same filter for my 35mm summilux on my Leica MP240 and I was so impressed with the results. And, it stays on my Leica as well.

I've used the Tiffen version of this and there are two notable differences. One, this filter has far less color shift than the Tiffen. Also, this filter has threading on front side of the filter so you can add a simple sunshade that will spin with the filter. I bought the General Brand sunshade and it works well.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I am able to slow down my shutter speed by 1 to 5 stops as described. This filter is helpful for my longer exposures.

Like all B+W filters, high quality construction. Variable density has a very wide range.

Just like other sizes of B&W ND filters I own, the 72mm is pure quality, no colour cast, very well made, and does the job beautifully.

Rather pricey, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Worked as intended. The rotation has just the right tension and not too loose.

Simply perfect. Great build quality and glass. Hard stops at each end (no X pattern). Little to no color shift. I wouldn’t dare to say it replaces solid ND’s but this is the best variable ND filter I have ever used.
