A: Focus distance is technically the distance from the film plane or sensor plane to the subject. For a 60mm lens at 1:1, this is about 9 inches. The distance from the front of the lens barrel to the subject is much less, and for the Micro Nikkor 60mm is about 4.25 inches. I have both the 60mm and the 105mm Micro lenses, and the 105 leaves a lot more room at 1:1. But I use the 60mm as a 'normal' lens that can focus as close as I want, and find it very useful for close-in scenic work.
