A: At the same apertures, it performs just very slightly better than the DC, but almost the same. If images are produced by skilled shooters, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference in a blind test at the same apertures. Of course the new lens goes to f/1.4 where the depth of field effect is dramatic, which is the main selling point. The new lens has slightly more distortion but less flare and CA owing to better coatings. The new lens does not have a DC control ring to manipulate bokeh. The new lens does not have an aperture ring, unlike the DC-Nikkor, so it is practically worthless for classic Nikon SLRs. The new lens is light and plasticky feeling, unlike the older solid metal and glass crinkle-coated DC-Nikkor. A: I didn't get on the waiting list when this lens was first released to have a low serial number, I jumped on it because I knew it would be perfect for my work as a wedding photographer. This lens is one of the best lenses I've ever been able to use. It's like carrying around a 400mm f2.8. It's amazingly sharp and makes backgrounds look like they were airbrushed. Who cares where it was made? Care about the pictures is makes.
