Offering true recording versatility, the black Panasonic Lumix G7 is a true hybrid mirrorless camera that blends 4K UHD video with advanced still capture and burst shooting capabilities. Revolving around a 16 MP Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor and Venus Engine 9 image processor, the G7 features notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 25600, continuous shooting to 8 fps with single-shot AF, as well as a trio of 30 fps shooting rates based on the 4K UHD video recording. Complementing the fast burst shooting modes is an equally adept DFD autofocus system, which works to quicken focusing speeds and emphasize accurate subject tracking for consistently sharp imagery in fast-paced and trying working conditions. Rounding out the feature-set of the G7 is a contemporary body design accentuated by physical exposure control dials, six customizable function buttons, both a high-resolution EVF and 3.0" tilting touchscreen LCD, and built-in Wi-Fi for wireless sharing and remote camera control. Bridging the gap between stills and video, the Lumix DMC-G7 pairs these two high-resolution mediums with refined focusing and shooting controls for the utmost in shooting versatility.

Included with the camera body is the well-rounded Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens, which provides a 28-84mm equivalent focal length range to cover wide-angle to short telephoto perspectives. An Optical Image Stabilizer compensates for camera shake for sharper handheld shooting while a pair of aspherical elements help to minimize the overall lens size and maintain a high degree of sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range.

A 16 MP Live MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor pairs with an updated Venus Engine 9 to deliver fast overall performance with matched image quality to suit working in a wide variety of lighting conditions with consistent results. Sensitivity ranges from ISO 200 to 25600, with the ability to extend down to ISO 100 for working in bright conditions or with longer shutter speeds. Versatile burst shooting modes also allow you to pair high continuous shooting rates with AF; including shooting up to 8 fps with AF-S, 6 fps with AF-C in one area, and 6 fps during live view. For even faster performance, up to 40 fps shooting is possible with the electronic shutter function or 30 fps at 8 MP using the 4K Photo Modes.

The sensor and processor combination also helps to ensure notable image quality through the use of accurate white balance settings, Live TTL direct exposure metering, and intelligent NR (Noise Reduction) control for clean, natural imagery. Additionally, the Venus Engine 9 aids in reducing image blur caused by diffraction using electronic adjustment to automatically sharpen edges for clearer results when photographing with smaller aperture sizes.

In addition to the versatile still shooting modes, the G7 also supports recording 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video with either 30p or 24p frames rates at 100Mbps in the MP4 format. Full HD 1080p/60 is also supported, in both MP4 and AVCHD formats, as well as HD and SD resolutions.

A built-in stereo microphone can be used during recordings, and features an integrated wind-cut filter, or an optional external microphone can be utilized via the 3.5mm jack for even clearer sound.

Utilizing the 4K video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8 MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:

  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8 MP images at 30 fps for up to 29 min. 59 sec., making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8 MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8 MP frame.

When using any of the 4K Photo modes, you are afforded complete exposure control using the PSAM dial in order to base metering results and exposure configurations on your own shooting needs.

For accelerated autofocus performance, which performs in low-light conditions down to -4 EV, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in as little as 0.07 seconds. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as depth of field distances.

Featuring a sleek design that is characteristic to Micro Four Thirds cameras, the G7 pairs retro aspects with modern functionality for intuitive use and classic appeal. Front and rear dials avail direct aperture and shutter speed control, as well as quick changing of ISO and white balance settings. Six function buttons can be assigned to control a range of custom features and the main drive wheel offers fast switching between shooting modes, including the 4K Photo modes.

For greater versatility when shooting, both a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and rear LCD monitor are available. The 2.36m-dot OLED Live View Finder features a 10,000:1 contrast ratio for bright, accurate viewing of scenes, even in difficult lighting. The 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a static touchscreen design for intuitive navigation and control, as well as a vari-angle design for easier working from high and low angles.

Rounding out the handling capabilities, the G7 also features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for wirelessly sharing images and remotely controlling the camera from a linked mobile device using the Panasonic Image App. Connection is simplified using a QR code system to pair the smartphone or tablet with the camera.

A versatile standard zoom, the Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. is a 28-84mm equivalent wide-to-short tele featuring an Optical Image Stabilizer to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Two aspherical elements are incorporated within the lens design to reduce the overall size and weight as well as benefit image sharpness and clarity. Complementing the optical design is an internal focusing system that pairs with the camera's contrast-detection AF for quick, accurate focusing performance.

  • An electronic shutter function affords both a high top shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec. as well as silent operation for quick, inconspicuous shooting.
  • UHS-II SDHC/SDXC memory cards are supported in order to benefit the high-resolution, data-intensive 4K movie and raw burst shooting workflows.
  • An Electronic Level Gauge can be used to help ensure level horizons and plumb verticals.
  • HDR (High Dynamic Range) automatically composites several images of varying exposures in order to gain greater highlight and shadow details and an extensive middle range of tones.
  • A built-in pop-up flash provides additional illumination for photographing in difficult lighting conditions, and features a guide number of 20.3' at ISO 100.
  • A Panorama mode automatically stitches together multiple images in order to realize one wide-spanning horizontal or vertical image.
  • Photo Style modes: Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, Custom, Cinelike D, and Cinelike V.
  • Creative Control modes: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.
  • Language support: English, Japanese, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese (Traditional).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Under the heading In The Box it states that the lens that comes with the silver camera also has a silver finish, but all the pictures of the combination show a black lens. What does it actually come with?

A: The 14-42mm is black. The only silver lens is the longer 45-150. I purchased the kit with both lenses. Im glad I got the silver it still looks great with the black lens. Hope this helps.

Q: 2. is this camera compatible with Sigma and Zeiss lenses?

A: This camera is compatible with any lens that is micro4/3rds format.

Q: 3. Is the 8-bit 4:2:2 HDMI out 4K or only 1080P? I have the feeling it's not 4K, can somebody confirm that?

A: This is a 4k capable camera.

Q: 4. Does this camera makes sounds when it focus? Or is it silent? Thanks

A: This camera allows you to change the Beep Volume, E-Shutter Volume and enable a Silent Mode.

Q: 5. Does the G7 gives me the option to record .MOV files like the G4 and is there any time limit for recording video or is it only limited by the size of the SD card I use?

A: No .MOV file capability, only AVCHD or MP4. According to the manual, if you are recording FHD/HD/VGA, recording will stop at 29min59sec OR when the file exceeds 4GB (whichever comes first). If you are recording in 4K, recording will stop at 29min59sec and the files will be split up into 4GB chunks.

Q: 6. Will the autofocus work while shooting video?

A: it works well with wide angle lenses above f 5.6 don't go above 20 mm focal length and its pretty good 12mm being optimum.

Q: 7. Recording externally, will features be the same as when doing internally (apart video being uncompressed)? it's been noted that stuff like focus peaking becomes sharper once you hit record, BUT the HDMI output shuts off WHEN recording in-camera. Perhaps in other words, are quality and features the same in video standby as when recording?

A: Well, i do not have an external recorder, so i can't tell about the functions, as peaking, but, as far as i know, the G7 can only record externally OR internally, so trying to record internally will turn the HDMI off, and while you are recording externally, the camera display goes off. But the video quality is better in the HDMI output, as it is recorded in low compression formats, such as ProRes, which, perhaps its bigger file sizes, uses less power to be processed by the computer and react nicer to effects. And the external recorders usually has their own peaking's and all those stuff, and can go through the camera 29m recording limit, so, if you can afford it, is the better option.

Q: 8. If you have reached the 29 Minutes 59 Seconds record limit and still has power and memory will it just keep recording to a new file?

A: No. After thirty minutes, the camera will automatically stop recording. However, you can just start recording right after. The camera will make a new file when the current file hits 4GB which is the file size limit for the SD Card File System that the camera uses. (Fat32) So say you are recording in 4k, 5 or so minutes of recording will create a 4GB file. The camera will keep recording but just split it into multiple files. The only times the camera will stop recording is if the 30 min limit is reached or if the camera runs out of memory or battery.

Q: 9. Is it weather resistant?

A: No, this camera is not weather resistant.

Q: 10. After recording some 4K footage on the G7, I put the memory card in my laptop and the MP4 files won't play on my Macbook Pro?? I have a lot of other MP4 files that play just fine, but when playing these from the camera the footage will be extremely choppy on the laptop. All of the footage playbacks normally on the camera.

A: I think this issue is regarding with codecs. MAybe you need to acquire the last Codecs available for your operating system. Also I found this interesting that could be for help: google Edit Lumix DMC-G7 4K MP4 in iMovie/FCP X and look in the site TransferMyVideoFiles, there is an explanation regarding with your topic

I was attracted to this camera for its ability to shoot 4K video as well a wide assortment of still possibilities. I have been shooting HD 1280 video on three different Panasonic video cameras for the past eight years. My interest in using 4K was the ability to photograph master video shots that could be reedited and enlarged to HD video without loosing picture quality. I recently captured some stunning footage of a 5 year old granddaughter testing her ability to tree swing after she saw The Jungle Book. I was able to photograph her in a wide shot and then break the shot up in the editing process into various close up shots. I enlarged portions of the frame by 400% and still had a beautiful 1280 HD shot in the final video. The same goes for the still side of this camera. The same granddaughter was photographed playing with a snail. In one shot she was holding the snail in her hand and I enlarged the image by 1000% so that the reflection in her eyes could be seen and you could see a image of her outstretched arm and her hand holding the snail! Amazing. The ability to do time lapse has provided some excellent results for video. The possibilities for creative photography in both stills and video is extraordinary. To really discover what this camera can do will require spending some time studying the extended instructions (and/or watching some YouTube videos). The time spent will result in some beautiful images!

This is a gorgeous 4k camera. I actually prefer it over the gh4 due to it's light weight. It does not have a headphone out however, so I would recommend an external audio interface.

Coming from a canon 70D I was wanting something that took better video but wasn't expensive. Though the canon takes better pictures, video from the g7 is remarkable.

This is a very sweet little camera, especially for the money paid. The G7 offers a level of customisation unheard of for the price. It takes a while to learn to set it up but once there everything you need or want is at your finger tips. The photo's right up to 16x20 are impeccable, 11x14 and under are exquisite. The one thing I do miss with the smaller sensor is the smooth and extended dynamic range of an aps-c or full frame offering. I don't miss the size, cost of lenses, and weight of the larger cameras so...For me, the G7 is quite perfect. Five Stars. No question!
