Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If my project is 4k, will I have video on the reference monitor through this device?

A: The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Monitor 3G 3G-SDI/HDMI Playback Device will output in HD resolutions only. It does not support 4k resolutions if this is what you must work at. It supports Resolutions up to 1080p60. It would still work with a 4k projector but only in HD resolutions.

Q: 2. What software is recommended to capture the video at 1080p on a Mac?

A: The Ultrastudio Recorder comes with software for capturing video on your computer. It is also compatible with tons of 3rd party software such as Wirecast.

Q: 3. What is the difference between using this device and having an HDMI directly from the computer to a monitor ?

A: The UltraStudio Monitor 3G 3G-SDI/HDMI Playback Device allows for real-time monitoring while editing video to either a TV or Production monitor, offering both pro/consumer based HDMI and Professional-grade option of SDI. This would be outputting a video stream rather than mirroring a computer display as you would HDMI from computer to a computer monitor.

Q: 4. For a workflow with an M1 Mac and an Asus PA329c, how is this different from having the monitor plugged via USBc and having Resolve displaying the picture with Clean Feed Output?

A: When you have your monitor connected directly to your computer the operating system (in this case MacOS) is in control of the picture profile. While it is possible to calibrate the monitor using an X-Rite or Datacolor MacOS may still make changes to the profile to make things look "better" (things like night shift, adjusting brightness, etc). Therefore when you use the "Clean Feed" feature the monitor's color reproduction is subject to what MacOS thinks is best. When you use the Ultra Studio monitor it removes your operating system from the equation. The UltraStudio Mini Monitor enables DaVinci Resolve software to send a 10-bit image directly to your monitor. It also means that any calibration tuning etc will have to be done in Davinci instead of the operating system. This helps ensure that you have the most accurate representation of your work while you are editing.

Q: 5. Does the device need to be connected to the Mac's thunderbolt 3 port directly to output 10 bit signal, or can it be connected to a daisy chain port on another monitor?

A: The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Monitor 3G 3G-SDI/HDMI Playback Device can be connected via a daisy-chain Thunderbolt connection.

Q: 6. Can I use this in a thunderbolt 3 dock? Trying to get 4 display outputs with 2 TB3 ports on iMac

A: That is not an approved or recommended workflow, but it may work with certain docks as long as there is enough bandwidth and power.

Q: 7. Only works with 60 fps sequences in Premiere and Avid?! Is it because I'm using an HDMI cable? Does it mean I have to buy an SDI to HDMI converter for my HDTV to show any framerate?

A: Thanks for your replies! Meanwhile I tried multiple things. I'm writing this in case someone have the same problem in the future. I have no idea why, but after installing the latest version of Resolve, and started brand new projects (tried Premiere and Avid) on my local drive, it finally works! 23,98 sequences are playing now. Still having minor issues with 29,97 sequences, but it's already way better!

Q: 8. What type of cable and/or adapter will I need to get the s-video output of my old Sony HVR Z1U camcorder into this so I can output to my MacBook Pro? Thanks.

A: You will need to use an Analog to SDI converter such as the Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Analog to SDI (BH #BLASDIMC • MFR #CONVMAAS2)

Q: 9. Does it come with a thunderbolt cable?

A: No, it doesn't come with a thunderbolt cable.

Q: 10. Will this work for streaming still images from A Sony A7iii stll camera?

A: No it will not. This product is designed for processing video. If your goal is to stream photos you should use a USB cable and a tethering software such as Capture One.
