Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens compatible with the 5DS?

A: Yes it us compatible with the 5DS, if by compatible you mean will it mount on the body and function completely. I do not have a 5DS but this lens was developed quite recently, probably near the same time period as the 5DS was being developed. Contact Canon if you have more specific questions or concerns.

Q: 2. Will this lens have a tripod collar? If it does not will it be compatible with the German made Roesch tripod collar made for the previous version of this lens?

A: I received my copy of this lens and was able to attach my Roesch tripod collar from my old 100-300mm and it works well.

Q: 3. How is this as a video lens? Is it reasonably parfocal when focus is set at maximum zoom, and then the lens is zoomed out? Will it adjust autofocus mid-zoom, or does it wait until the zoom is complete? Does it have much focus breathing?

A: The Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens is not a parfocal lens. You will have to re-focus the lens if you adjust the lens' zoom length. That being said, you may still use the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens for video recording needs, depending on your video application needs.

Q: 4. I shoot most images from a tripod, and very often images wherein I am angling the camera downward (including some straight down) - since the focal length cannot be locked, does the lens' Tight/Smooth feature work well enough to keep the lens from creeping while taking long shots?

A: The Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens has a zoom torque adjustment that allows you to tighten the zoom ring so that lens creep is not a problem.

Q: 5. What is the latest firmware for this lens ?

A: The latest firmware for the EF 100-400mm L lens is v 1.0.7. You can download the firmware on Windows or Mac machines in the link below. https://bit.ly/3lc6dIO

Q: 6. The Sony FE 100-400 lens is said to be compatible with the 1.4 and2.0 teleconverters.Does this also mean that they will autofocus with one or both of these teleconverters?

A: Hi Walter, yes. The 1.4 & 2.0 teleconverter supports AF. -Anthony

Q: 7. Can the cannon telephoto zoom 100-400 mm be used on the cannon D and a mirrorless r 6 ?

A: The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is natively compatible with the Canon 5D Mk IV and other DSLRs, but will require an adapter to be used with the EOS R6 and other mirrorless cameras.

Q: 8. using this lens on the a6600 body, which teleconverter would be better for wildlife and nature photography? The 1.4x or the 2x?

A: Both the 1.4x and the 2x teleconverters are fully compatible. The 1.4x would turn the lens into 140-560mm f6.3-8 while the 2x would be 200-800mm f8-11. So while the 1.4x would be better in low light and/or at lower ISO ranges, the 2x would be better for longer focal ranges which could determine whether or not you capture the shot of a skittish animal.

Q: 9. Is this lens versatile enough for outdoor softball and indoor volleyball with a 1DX?

A: This is a great lens for both indoor and outdoor use! Your exposure settings will need some tweaking due to its moderate aperture size, but it works excellent for a variety of genres and on a multitude of subjects!

Q: 10. Is this lens suitable for indoor and outdoor sports?

A: The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens doesn't have the fastest aperture, so it may struggle in low light situations, but since most sports are played in well lit spaces (outside and inside), the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens should work well for capturing sports in either situation.
