Spanning a popular and versatile range of focal lengths, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is a Canon L-series zoom commonly thought of as the workhorse of lenses. Ranging from wide-angle to portrait length, this lens is also distinguished by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions and to afford greater control over depth of field. The lens is also characterized by its sophisticated optical design, which includes one Super UD element and two UD elements, which reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to realize a high degree of color accuracy and clarity. Three aspherical elements are also featured, and minimize distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness. Additionally, a Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to control flare and ghosting for high contrast and neutral color fidelity.

Balancing the refined optics, this 24-70mm f/2.8 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 38.4-112mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.

One Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element and two ultra-low dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.

Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Protective fluorine coating has been applied to the front and rear element to resist fingerprints and smudges and to make cleaning these elements significantly easier.

As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Zoom lock lever secures the zoom position at the wide end to maintain a compact form factor and protect the lens when not in use.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi all, is the lack of image stabilisation very terrible for video shooting ? I am only interested in this lens for video. Would prefer this to 2 primes for quick event videography.

A: If you are planning on hand-holding the lens, then it would simply depend on your hand-holding skill with lenses as to if the lens will be appropriate for your needs, and also if you will either be shooting in bright lighting or low lighting, and if you will be on a moving platform. While Image Stabilization would help in many of these situations, it is possible to shoot without image stabilization, and until recently, many camcorders and some lenses did not have stabilization, so shooting without stabilization was the norm, and has only recently been popularized with newer, more affordable technology. There is always the option to use a tripod or a hand-held or body-attached stabilization system to support your camera if conditions call for it, but the lack of image stabilization does not immediately make video recording terrible. Do note that many prime lenses also do not have stabilization built into the lens

Q: 2. How well does this lens work with a 1.4x III EF extender? Has anyone tried this combo as an alternative to the 24-105 lens that doesn't get such good ratings?

A: The Canon Extenders will not work with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II USM lens. I have used them with the 70-200mm lens with good results.

Q: 3. Renting lens

A: B&H does not offer rentals unfortunately.

Q: 4. can i mount this to my canon 60d?thanks

A: The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 is fully compatible with any Canon DSLR or EOS SLR, including the 60D.

Q: 5. How steady is this lens without built in stabilization?

A: This lens will perform well.

Q: 6. Is the Canon 24-70 ii weather sealed?

A: Yes, it is weather sealed. I took it on a snowy trip to Yellowstone and it was great!

Q: 7. How is this lens for video? (I own a sony a7s) Planning on buying the c100 mkii

A: I use it for all my YouTube cooking videos and it works perfectly (you can google Downshiftology). And while I love my prime lenses, because I move the camera around so much when shooting cooking videos, the zoom makes my life much easier. The only drawback is there's no autofocus with this lens on my 5D Mark ii.

Q: 8. Will a square filter of 84 x 120 mm fit at the front of this lens?

A: For square filters, you will need a square filter holder depending on the brand of filter you're using.

Q: 9. extended warranty??

A: Yes! it exists! It can be found by clicking the see details link under the product information.

Q: 10. Is it possible to use an adapter for this lens to a Sony A7? If so, which adapter would you recommend?

A: Yes I'm sure you can. I have no experience in doing this though. I have heard that depending on the adapter the autofocus can be good to poor. Maybe a Sony or Zeiss lens made for the A7 would be a better choice?
