Similar to their Schmidt cousins, this 102mm f/13 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope from Sky-Watcher exchanges the conventional front corrector plate with a convex meniscus lens, which results in a smaller secondary mirrorlimiting obstruction and increasing contrast, while eliminating the need for periodic collimation. The Maksutov optical path results in a slower focal ratio and narrower field of view versus a similar Schmidt, but the optical benefits, when coupled with the larger aperture and fully multi-coated optics, make this an ideal scope for solar, lunar, planetary, and deep-sky observation of bright objects like stars and clusters.

The scope is outfitted with a 1.25" visual back and, to get users started, Sky-Watcher includes 10 and 25mm eyepieces that produce low and moderate magnifications and a 90° star diagonal for more comfortable viewing when the optical tube assembly (OTA) is pointed at or near the celestial zenith. The OTA is offered here without a mount or tripod for users who have a platform or want to use it as part of a dual-OTA setup for star parties or observation/imaging rigs. It is outfitted with a Vixen-style dovetail plate for easy attachment onto many mounts. This OTA's compact form factor belies its observation power and resolution and is ideally suited as a grab-and-go option for quick observation sessions or heading out to remote locations.

Scope arrived in perfect condition. Collimation was dead on. No image shift when focusing. Views of Mars, Saturn and Jupiter were much better than I hoped for! With an orange filter, markings on Mars were visible. Highly recommended if you like small scopes!

Just bought it yesterday and i am in love, the views are SHARP, sharpest ive ever seen, lunar craters look amazing from this, have not tested it on deep sky, but stars are nice and round.

I have wanted a telescope since middle school, but procrastinated for over 60 years. Now I have a Sky-Watcher 4 Maksutov and life is good.
This telescope is the largest size which will work with an iOptron SkyGuider mount, and altogether is portable enough to take out on a whim, or travel by air. The Sky-Watcher is made very well. The construction is solid but not too heavy. The optics are entirely enclosed, except for the opening for an eyepiece or camera. Focusing is by a small knob which moves the primary mirror. There is little or no evidence of wobble in the focusing process. The kit comes with a finder (red dot), star diagonal (mirror), and two eye pieces, 25 mm (52x) and 10 mm (130x), both reasonably good quality Ploessl lenses. The red dot finder (like a gunsight) makes it easy to find objects suitable for the magnification, and is simple to align on a bright object (e.g., Sirius or the moon). With the addition of an inexpensive camera adapter and T-mount, the Sky-Watcher becomes a 1300 mm lens, perfect fo sharing the moon and most Messier objects with friends. The FOV with a FF camera is about 1.2 arc-degrees. A 4 aperture can be used to view objects as dim as Magnitude 12 or 13. A larger scope and eyepiece (2 v 1.25) would be better for viewing or astrophotography, but much heavier and starting at 4x the cost (including mount). Im extremely happy for now, and its something to share with my grandchildren. Best of all, it arrived in time for the Blood Wolf Super Moon eclipse on 1-20-19.

I have a number of telescopes, each with their own purpose. This is my first Maksutov and I immediately went with the largest one I could find. The packaging was well done and as I watched the FedEx® guy bring it to my front door and holding it against his side I saw it slide out of his arm and hit the pavement. He was texting his delivery recorder as he walked along. So much pressure to multitask during his deliveries.

I called B&H immediately, explained the situation and they told me that if there were any issues to just contact them and they'd take care of it. I love this Company and why I use them more and more with time.

The contents of the heavy box were in good order, and I could see no disturbance with my new Mak. I attribute this to great packaging and the robustness of the scope.

The only thing I'd prefer is a couple of rings for the Vixen® rail to make it easier to use an Alt-Az head. But the Vixen is still strong and well attached. Eventually I'll mate it to a future Sky-Watcher tracker, almost certainly purchased at B&H®.

Kudos to them for a great product delivered in a timely fashion and backing up the contents. Look forward to more good things.

Bought this as an airline Carry-on Grab and Go and like both the 102 Mak and the mount.  The AZ-GTi is quite compact, coolly works off your smartphone, and is sturdy enough to handle other larger scopes. Dont use the tripod, but do use the center post with a lighter tripod. Great package for the price.

I’ve wanted one of these for quite some time, and am glad I
finally pushed the purchase button. The scope is well made. The optics are
sharp and contrasty; what one would expect from a good MCT. The collimation
seems to be very good, if not just slightly off. I added a third-party dual-speed
focuser for imaging, and the focus accuracy was much improved. I’m not fond of
the mounting plate being attached to the optical tube. It’s not a light scope,
so rings and a handle would make handling way easier. Overall, I’m happy with
it.

The attached moon image was taken at prime focus with an
APS-C sensor to give a reference to the magnification at a roughly 4300mm focal
length with the cropped sensor.

MCT’s aren’t usually used for deep sky objects, but I wanted
to see what it was capable of. So, I imaged the Orion Nebula with a narrowband
filter for approximately two hours at 30 sec. subs. I didn’t want to blow out
the core, so I pushed the levels and curves just a little to get this image of
Orion’s stellar nursery.

Don't let this little Maksutov's size fool you! This little 4 inch scope provides sharp, crisp, views of solar system objects, double stars, and the brighter deep sky objects. The views have excellent contrast, focusing is very smooth, and the Vixen/Synta style dovetail with 1/4-20 mounting holes provides many options for available tripods. The included eyepieces, and diagonal, along with the easy to use red dot reflex finder, make this an excellent package to get you started. Plus, the scope comes packaged in a nice soft carrying bag, making this a good choice for a grab and go scope for quick viewing sessions. It also includes a 1.25 visual back, that is threaded to accept a T ring camera mount. For my first viewing session, I mounted it to my Explore Scientific Twilight 1 mount, and enjoyed some great views of Jupiter, the globular star cluster, M13 in Hercules, and late in the evening, fantastic views of Saturn. The optics are sharp enough to easily handle being pushed to 150x magnification on an evening of mediocre seeing. I was able to couple my Rebel T5 to the scope the first session, along with a 2x barlow, and get a nice image of Jupiter. The attached, single image, is simply cropped, and lightened up just a bit, no other processing was applied. Every time I use it, I am amazed at the detail it is able to resolve, being such a small instrument. Sky Watcher offers a true winner with this scope, combined with the included accessories. As an added bonus, this can be used as a full manual, 1300mm telephoto lens during the daytime.

This was a gift for my husband. He was very surprised and so excited. He has already taken it out to look at the sky. It is so easy to use and compact, but yet powerful. He is a novice but is already looking to get extras for his new scope.
