Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Where do you buy replacement hard drives for this model?
A: Any standard SATA III 2.5" or 3.5" hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD) can be installed in this unit. Please note that if creating/using RAID sets, the drives installed must be of the same specification.
Q: 2. Does it work with windows ?
A: The ThunderBay 4 is not supported on a Windows computer. Please note that it is also not supported in Windows when running on a Mac in BootCamp.
Q: 3. Is it possible to create partitions on these drives? For example, for Mac, set up a partition for a time machine backup.
A: Yes, setting up partitions is possible.
Q: 4. Is the OWC Thunder Bay 4 compatible with MacBook Air mid 2013 model?
A: Yes, this unit has Thunderbolt 2 built in which is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 1 which the computer has.
Q: 5. Does it come with the drives?
A: Per the description, the listing you are referring to: "This particular ThunderBay 4 model comes with four 6TBTB 3.5" 7200 rpm drives for a total of 24TB storage capacity."
Q: 6. Is it still 48TB when configured in RAID 5 array?
A: When the OWC ThunderBay 4 48TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID 5 Array (4 x 12TB) is set up for RAID 5 12TB of the total storage capacity of the array will be dedicated to parity data storage, so the total storage will appear as 36TB instead of the full 48TB.
Q: 7. What is the difference between this model (JBOD) and the slightly more expensive RAID 5 Edition? I realize the Raid 5 Edition comes pre formatted as a RAID 5. But it looks like you can format the cheaper option as a RAID 5 via disk utility. Is it just the SoftRAID software that comes with the RAID 5 edition? Which leads me to my second question, do you need SoftRAID to rebuild a lost disk and run the RAID 5?
A: The only difference is the RAID software. Apple RAID cannot create a RAID 5 array, it can only create RAID 0 and RAID 1. The latest Mac OS cannot create a RAID array at all, this feature was removed from Disk Utility.
Q: 8. Can I use this with two separate macbook pros? Not at the same time, but unplug from one, and use it on the second one? Or is it locked to just one, where you have the softraid installed?
A: The OWC ThunderBay 4 4TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID 5 Array (4 x 1TB) BH #OWTB3SRT040S can be used with any compatible Mac, it is not locked to the computer that has Softraid installed.
Q: 9. Is it possible to swap disk packs and preserve the data?
A: When configured in RAID 5 the OWC ThunderBay 4 can preserve data in the event of one disk failure at a time.
Q: 10. Do you know the read/write speeds for this in a RAID 5 configuration?
A: Sequential Read/Write (compressible data) Read: 585MB/s Write: 607MB/sSequential Read/Write (incompressible data) Read: 594MB/s Write: 548MB/s
