A: I never raise the center column. On several of my tripods I cut the center post so I can get closer to the ground for micro work with plants. However this has been the best Manfrotto tripod I've used.

Having been using DSLRs for over 20 years, I prefer the versatility of a ball head any day over a fluid head. If you take more pictures, use a ball head. If you do video mostly, get a fluid head. There are inexpensive ball heads out there. This fluid head is very well built and is smooth as butter.
