Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. My son does video work for school shows on 2 canon xh-a1s cameras. He wants to record onto memory cards instead of Mini DV tapes. Would this product achieve this?

A: The Canon XH-A1S has analog video outputs while the Video Assist has HDMI and SDI digital video inputs for capture. This will only work if you use an analog to HDMI or SDI converter in between.

Q: 2. Will this give my a7iii unlimited recording?

A: The Video Assist 3G 5" only has 1 SD card slot so you can only record for as long as your SD card can fit. The 7" models are the ones with 2 SD card slots you can use for continuous recording.

Q: 3. I can't change zebra to over 85%-well I can, but it doesn't show anything! last stop is 85%, higher than this zebra just dissapears! Also i cannot change the date or the recording resolution and fps. Also even though my Video Assist is connected via SDI to my Ursa Mini, and trigger is set to 'over sdi' from the camera, pressing record on the camera doesn't start recording on Video Assist.Does anyone have any answers for this quite annoying errors?Nevertheless, it's a great piece of equipment!

A: I noticed a similar but somewhat different problem with my BMCC 2.5K, I have experienced the same Disappearing Zebra's as you have however in my case with my BMCC 2.5K I only loose them when I have my Zebra's set to ABOVE 90%, at 90% they are still there but if I go any higher they are gone. I have my monitor connected via SDI as well so after doing some research I think it might be and issue in part with SDI itself in terms of Legal vs Full range signal (Video vs Data (LOG) levels being transmitted over SDI I have noticed this problem before with RED EPIC and SONY Cine Alta Camera when connected to Blackmagic video devices like the Ultrascope 4K monitor, Both the REDs and Sony cameras are unable to show values above 95IRE on that Broadcast Ultracsope. I believe that because Blackmail Devices are geared toward Broadcast and Broadcast acceptable formats the Video Assist has trouble reading high values of luminance. It could also have to do with the SDI mode is your camera set to display Video dynamic range or Film domains range when you are in your camera's DISPLAY/MONITOR menu? When Blackmagic camera's are set to record RAW internally the SDI is automatically set to output 10-Bit LOG over SDI so the Video Assist might have trouble reading the LOG single over the SDI.In regards to SDI trigger problem, just set it to T/C Run instead of SDI, I know this sounds wrong because you have your camera connected over SDI but in my case with my BMCC 2.5K T/C Run works flawlessly.

Q: 4. They came with batteries

A: The Hollyland Mars 400S PRO SDI/HDMI Wireless Video Transmission System comes with a DC power adapter. You need to purchase batteries or another DC Power adapter to power the other unit.

Q: 5. If i plug a SDI input, from a Black Magic 4K, will it output the signal on HDMI as well so i can feed it into a wireless transmitter?

A: Both the SDI and HDMI signals are loop through and you are supposed to be able to view either output. And if you can view it, you can transmit it. So it is our opinion you will be able to do what you wish on this yet unreleased item.

Q: 6. Can this recorder display time/date and record it on the screen?

A: Details for the Video Assist are being worked out at this time and will not be known in full until release. Watch B&H for further information.

Q: 7. Would this work with an ATEM Mini switcher and a Pocket Cinema camera and retain the ability to control the camera from the ATEM? In other words would whatever commands it sends between the devices be stripped out?

A: Control from the ATEM Mini cannot work with extenders or wireless.

Q: 8. I have a Sony NEX-EA50 with the external recorder, truly improve the image of the NEX-EA50 camera?

A: With an external recorder like the BM Video Assist, you can get uncompressed video from the EA50 and save to a high quality codec, assuring you of the highest possible image quality.

Q: 9. Is this an IPS monitor? Or a TFT monitor with 6-bit?

A: This is a newly announced unreleased item whose specs are subject to change at any time. When it actually arrives, we will have a much better idea of what it has and how it does what it does.Since the BM Video Assist is touch screen, that suggests to me that it is IPS since non IPS screens show tailing when touched. We shall see soon.

Q: 10. Does it support Cross Conversion?

A: Hi Baffoe, yes of course.
