Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have a Sony NEX-EA50 with the external recorder, truly improve the image of the NEX-EA50 camera?

A: With an external recorder like the BM Video Assist, you can get uncompressed video from the EA50 and save to a high quality codec, assuring you of the highest possible image quality.

Q: 2. I have HDMI compatibility problems with my older Nikons and I'm assuming no issue with the D7200. Has Video Assist been tested on a D7000 and a D5100?

A: Unfortunately this monitor is not out in the wild yet for testing. Blackmagic has stated that the Video Assist HDMI/6G-SDI Recorder and 5 Monitor allows you to record from professional cameras and camcorders, as well as popular DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Do note that the Nikon D7000 as well as the D5100 do not output a native clean HDMI signal.

Q: 3. can I use a 400s pro transmitter to a 400s receiver for better latency ? I already have a 400 s

A: Hi John, sorry that Mars 400S Pro transmitter can not work with Mars 400S receiver.

Q: 4. Will this also transmit the embedded SDI/HDMI audio coming from the camera? For instance, will I hear sync'd audio to video when I plug in headphones to the monitor or iphone?

A: Hi Darren, yes of course.

Q: 5. Does this unit have the capability of Zebra &/or focus peaking?

A: At this time the statuses that have been announced for the BM Video Assist are: Transport controls, recording status, histogram, audio level, timecode, battery status, and more. No mention of zebra or focus peaking. Perhaps they are part of the design. We will find out after it's release.

Q: 6. Will this recorder let me bypass the 29.59 minute limit on my Canon 5D mkiii? Also, will my 5D output audio to this recorder?

A: You are correct that the 5D Mark III will not send audio over HDMI in the clean HDMI mode. Dennis L was mistakenly speaking about conventional mode where HDMI does carry audio. Regarding the Blackmagic Video Assist: since the output of the camera is the same, you would still need to use a cable for the audio when using the BM Video Assist.

Q: 7. Is this a battery life indicator on the transmitter unit? Hard to know when the battery is about to die otherwise.

A: Yes, the Hollyland Mars 400S PRO SDI/HDMI Wireless Video Transmission System does display a battery voltage indicator on the transmitter unit to monitor battery level of the battery attached to the transmitter.

Q: 8. In the product images the Video Assist has a histogram displayed. Does this monitor support other scopes: false color, vector, etc?

A: At this time, outside of histogram, audio meters, timecode display, and more it is not known exactly what the Blackmagic Video Assist will display. Please watch the B&H website for updates as they are known.

Q: 9. Can the 400s pro handle a 10 bit color depth output?

A: Hi John, the Mars 400S Pro can handle 8 bit color depth output

Q: 10. Will a 7D HDMI output be capable of recording 422 10 bit with this monitor?

A: The Blackmagic Design Video Assist will do 10-bit 4:2:2 video up to 1080p60 to high-speed U1 SDHC/XC memory cards using industry-standard Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, or Proxy) or Avid DNxHD codecs. In other words, if it gets a video signal, it will record 10-bit 4:2:2.If you have the Canon 7D Mark II, you are in luck and will be able to do what you wish. However, if you have a Canon 7D you cannot use any external recording because it does not have a clean HDMI out like the 7D Mark II and the 5D Mark III.
