A: I have the Canon EF 400 F5.6L and have run several in the field comparisons with the EF100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II. While I can get tack sharp images with the 400 F5.6L the new 100-400 images are as sharp, and the percentage of sharp images with the new 100-400 is much higher than with the 400 F5.6 thanks to Images Stabilization. Comparison shots were all hand held. Use of a tripod would increase the percentage of sharp images with the 400 F5.6L, but I tend to use both lens hand held and see no benefit for keeping the 400 F5.6.
