A: Hi Brian - I am using my AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens with a D7100, and it has served me well. While I am confident the FX 14-24 lens would provide excellent quality photos, it is also over twice the weight and cost. So, unless you plan to use the lens on an FX-format (full frame) camera body, or extensively in very low light conditions, it would seem to be overkill for your D5300. Also keep in mind that the effective minimum focal length is 15mm for the 10-24, and 21mm for the 14-24. I find the extra width useful at times, particularly when photographing buildings 'close up'. I carry my D7100 and two lenses in my PacSafe travel camera bag, and really appreciate the relatively small size and weight of the AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED Lens.
