Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can i connect both cameras to a video switcher and use only the program out to connect to the BDM Camera converter?? As we want only the program out to be send to another broadcast room.

A: The Camera Converter is a single camera device used to connect via fiber to the ATEM Studio/Talkback Converter and the ATEM. It is also designed to bring Program video back to the Camera Converter for local monitoring, tally and talkback.

Q: 2. would phantom power from a cinema camera power this microphone unit or would you need mixer/recorder?

A: Yes, this will work with any pre-amp that supplies 12v - 48v. If your camera has the option to switch the Phantom down to 12v, you should do so and save a little battery life.

Q: 3. I am looking for a talk back device in the control room, i have an BM ATEM 1 ME, I have BM Studio Cameras connected to the ATEM 1 ME, I would like to communicate with the camera operators but don't have the talk back XLR's on my ATEM switch. I was hopping this device would give me the ability to talk from the control room to the other BMSC operators?

A: The ATEM 1Me will not give you any option for talk back.If your connecting the BMD Studio converter to a Black Magic camera converter with LC Duplex fiber (single mode) you can plug your head set into the BMD Studio Converter (located back at the production space) and talk to as many cameras that you connect to with fiber.

Q: 4. Does the ATEM-CONV carry 4 channels of audio, specifically ch1, ch2, ch3 and ch4?

A: The Blackmagic Design ATEM Camera Converter carries two channels ( Ch1 and Ch2) of audio for stereo support.

Q: 5. Can I use the ATEM Camera Converter as talkback even without a video input? We're planning to acquire the Talkback Converter 4K which has 8 i/o and connect 3-4 non-BMD cameras to it. We're curious if we can use the camera converter's talkback capability as communication devices with our audio guy and other crew.

A: If you are not going to feed PGM back to the cameras, you should simply feed one of the camera outputs on the Talkback Converter to the PGM In and use the loop to your switcher. That way there is a signal feeding back to all cameras that will carry talkback.

Q: 6. Can I connect a BMPCC6K to this via HDMI, with the SDI Out going into the ATEM Talkback Converter 4K (and subsequently to the ATEM Television Studio Pro 4K), the SDI In coming from the converter, and the HDMI out going to a monitor without any hitches?

A: The Camera Converter only connects to the Talkback Converter using dual fiber for full functionality.

Q: 7. Can I use this with a Shure 47 or Sanken COS11D Lav that has a microdot connector? If not, what is the best solution, please. Thanks

A: Any microphone with the Microdot connector is expecting a DC bias level to bias the electret capsule. Normally the microdot connector of a bodypack will have approx 5 V DC bias. This DPA adapter is not just a simple resistive divider - it has a complete circuit board with biasing circuit and buffer amplifier to drive long mic cables. I measured 8 V open-circuit, and 2.5 V with my DPA 4066 headset connected. This leads me to believe that the final DC voltage level will depend on the bias current drawn by the specific brand/model of electret mic you connect to it (but it will never exceed 8 V). So, although I have not tested the particular models you mentioned, I believe that any microphone with a microdot connector can be used with this adapter without risk of damage. This is certainly a very nicely-made adapter with no expense spared on the circuit from what I can see.

Q: 8. will this 1080p ?

A: The Blackmagic Design ATEM Camera Converter has nothing to do with resolution.

Q: 9. Where are the tally LEDs? I don't see them on the photos.

A: According to Blackmagic "When a camera is on air a red LED illuminates on the ATEM Camera Converter and a red tally border is displayed on the converter's SDI and HDMI monitoring outputs!" https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/atemconverters

Q: 10. Does the TRRS cable split to plug into the headphone and mic jacks on the ATEM Camera Converter or do you just plug it into one or the other?

A: Hi Guy. The mic line circuitry and the headphone audio on the ATEM Camera Converter are actually wired together on the “Headphones” jack, which oddly enough is not indicated in the manual by Blackmagic. So, you just plug the TRRS plug into the "Headphones" jack on the ATEM and you will have full functionality including the mic. Thank you!
